(Recorded in the Lower Grade of *Shennong Bencao Jing*)
**[Names]** Leishi (Thunder Fruit, from *Mingyi Bielu*), Leishi (Thunder Excrement, ibid.).
Li Shizhen states: Lei Fu (Thunder Axe) and Lei Xi (Thunder Wedge) are all formed by the essence and qi when lightning strikes objects. This substance grows in the soil, has no stems or leaves, and can kill parasites and expel pathogenic factors, resembling a thunderball. It is formed by the residual qi of bamboo, hence called Zhuling (Bamboo Fungus). The character "Ling" was also used interchangeably with "Shi" (feces) in ancient times; thus, "Shi" and "Ling" were commonly used as interchangeable characters.
**[Collection and Description]** *Mingyi Bielu* states: Leiwanzhang grows in the valleys of Shicheng and in the soil of Hanzhong. The roots are harvested in August and dried in the sun.
Tao Hongjing states: It is currently produced between Jianping and Yidu. The fruits grow in clusters connected to each other, resembling pills.
Su Gong states: Leiwanzhang is the residual qi concretion of bamboo. It has no stems or vines, is scattered individually, and not connected. It is currently produced in Fangzhou and Jinzhou.
Li Shizhen states: Leiwanzhang is the size of a chestnut, rounder than Zhu Ling (Polyporus), with black skin and white flesh, and is very solid.
**[Preparation]** An unnamed author states: When using it, soak it in Licorice Water overnight. Scrape off the black skin with a copper knife and break it into four or five pieces. Soak again in Licorice Water for another night, steam it from Si hour to Wei hour, and dry it in the sun. Mix with wine, steam again, and dry in the sun before use.
Meng Xi states: It should be processed (pao) before medicinal use.
**[Flavor and Properties]** Bitter, Cold, slightly toxic.
*Mingyi Bielu* states: Salty, slightly Cold, slightly toxic. The red ones are lethal, while the white ones are effective.
Li Zhiang states: Shennong considered it Bitter; Huangdi, Qibo, and Tongjun considered it Sweet and Toxic; Bianque considered it Sweet and Non-toxic.
Li Dangzhi states: Greatly Cold.
Zhen Quan states: Bitter, slightly toxic.
Li Shizhen states: Sweet, slightly Bitter, Neutral.
Xu Zhicai states: Lishi (Lychee Seed), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), and Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower) act as its guides/enablers; it is incompatible with Xugen (Aconitum Root) and Gegen (Pueraria Root).
**[Indications]** Kills the three types of parasites, expels toxic heat in the stomach. Beneficial for men, but detrimental to women (*Shennong Bencao Jing*).
Made into a rubbing ointment, it eliminates various diseases in children, expels pathogenic factors, aversion to wind, and sweating. It clears heat accumulation and gu poison in the skin, and treats continuous discharge of Bai Chong (white worms) and Cunbai Chong (tapeworms). Long-term use causes impotence in men (*Mingyi Bielu*). Expels wind, primarily treats epilepsy and manic wandering (*Zhen Quan*).
**[Analysis and Commentary]** Tao Hongjing states: *Shennong Bencao Jing* says it benefits men, while *Mingyi Bielu* says long-term use causes impotence; these seem contradictory.
Kou Zongshi states: The statement that it benefits men but not women implies that it drains the primordial qi of men without draining the organ qi of women; hence, long-term use leads to male impotence.
Li Shizhen states: According to Fan Zhengmin's *Dunzhaiianlan*, Yang Zhongnian suffered from a strange illness where his abdomen would echo every time he spoke, eventually growing louder. A Daoist priest observed this and said: "This is an echoing worm. Read through the Materia Medica and use the herb that does not produce an echo." When reading about Leiwanzhang, there was no echo. He immediately took several pills and was cured.
**[Attached Prescriptions]** One old prescription, one new prescription.
Children's sweating with fever: Leiwanzhang 4 liang, rice flour 8 liang, ground into powder and dusted on the body (*Qianjin Fang*).
Expelling tapeworms: Leiwanzhang, soaked in water, peeled, sliced, baked, and ground into powder. At dawn, consume a small amount of roasted meat, then take one qianbi of the powder with thin porridge. It must be taken during the first half of the lunar month for the worms to be expelled (*Jingyan Qianfang*).
Parasites generated from muscle and tendon: See the prescription under Xionghuang (Realgar) in the Stone section.
