(From *Bencao Shayi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Correction] Originally appended under the entry for "Li" (a type of wild cat), it is now separated into its own entry.
[Names] Fengmu (Wind Mother) (*Bencao Gangmu*), Fengsheng Shou (Wind-Generated Beast) (same).
Li Shizhen said: The Fengli can soar and leap with the wind; after death, it revives upon exposure to wind, and it also treats wind diseases, hence the name "Feng" (Wind).
This describes its rugged and towering posture.
[Collected Explanations] Chen Cangqi said: The Fengli is produced south of Yongzhou. It resembles a rabbit but is shorter, inhabits high trees, waits for the wind to blow it to other trees, and eats fruits.
Its urine is like milk, very difficult to obtain; one must capture and rear it to acquire it.
In its ordinary state, it resembles a monkey. The "Fengxing" (Wind Orangutan) in *Lingnan Yiwu Zhi* [Record of Strange Things in Lingnan], the [missing character] in *Youyang Zazu* [Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang], and the "Fengli" in *Yuheng Zhi* [Records of Plants and Animals] are all the same animal, differing only slightly in their patterns. This beast lives in the mountain forests of Lingnan and beyond the western borders of Shu. Its size is like that of a civet or an otter; its shape is like a macaque but smaller; its eyes are red; its tail is so short it seems non-existent; its color is yellowish-green with black markings, and its pattern resembles that of a leopard. Some say it has no hair on its body except for a strip of green hair running from nose to tail, about one cun wide and three to four fen long. Its urine is like milk. Its nature includes eating spiders and also consuming Olibanum (Frankincense). By day, it curls up motionless like [missing character]; by night, it leaps swiftly with the wind, crossing rocks and trees as if flying in the air. When caught in nets by humans, it exhibits a shy demeanor, bowing its head and begging for mercy when seeing people. If beaten by humans, it suddenly dies; facing its mouth toward the wind, it revives shortly afterward. Only by crushing its bones or breaking its brain can it truly die. Another account states that it cannot be cut by knives nor scorched by fire; beating it feels like hitting a leather bag. Even if its head is broken by iron, it rises again upon exposure to wind; only by blocking its nostrils with Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shichangpu) will it die. Yet another claim is that this beast often holds a small stick, pointing at objects with it; whatever flies or runs away cannot escape. When seeing people, it discards the stick. After being severely beaten by humans, it uses its finger to indicate things. Humans use it to point at objects to achieve their desires. These two accounts appear in *Shizhou Ji* [Record of the Ten Continents] and *Lingnan Zhi* [Record of Lingnan], but it is uncertain whether they are true.
Brain
[Indications] Taken after soaking in wine, it cures wind diseases (Li Shizhen. From *Lingnan Zhi*). Taken together with Chrysanthemi Flos (Chrysanthemum Flower) up to ten jin, it can promote longevity (*Shizhou Ji*).
Urine
[Indications] Treats various wind disorders (Chen Cangqi). Treats severe wind disease (*Yuheng Zhi*).
