[Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark)]
The qi is cold. The flavor is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats internal injury to the middle jiao, five types of fatigue and six extremes, emaciation, metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding), and pulselessness. It tonifies deficiency and benefits qi. (Used after being baked/dried).
Sangbaipi has a cold qi, inheriting the winter cold water energy from nature, entering the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its flavor is sweet and non-toxic, obtaining the central earth flavor from the earth, entering the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Its nature is descending and its flavor is mild, belonging to Yin. "Middle" refers to the Spleen in the Middle Jiao. The Spleen is the origin of Yin Qi. Heat damages the middle. Sangbaipi is sweet and cold, thus it primarily treats injury to the middle. "Five Fatigues" refer to the depletion of true qi in the five Zang organs. "Six Extremes" refer to the extreme deficiency of Qi in the six Fu organs. When both Zang and Fu are deficient, muscles waste away leading to emaciation. The reason Sangbaipi treats these conditions is that its sweetness consolidates Spleen Qi and supplements insufficiency, while its coldness clears internal heat and retreats fire pathogens. As pathogens retreat and Spleen Yin fills up, and since the Spleen governs muscles, the muscles naturally become plump and the extremity of fatigue heals. "Metrorrhagia" refers to blood loss. The vessels are the reservoir of blood; when blood is lost, the pulse ceases to come. The Spleen controls blood and is the origin of Yin Qi; sweetness can benefit the Spleen, thus it treats metrorrhagia and pulselessness. Fire and Yuan Qi (Original Qi) are mutually exclusive. Cold qi clears fire, sweet flavor benefits Qi. When Qi is full, fire retreats; deficiency is supplemented and Qi benefits.
Prescription Applications:
Sangbaipi combined with Baishao (White Peony Root), Yiren (Coix Seed), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), BaiFu (Poria), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), and Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean) treats edema with miraculous effect. Combined with Baishao, Shashen (Glehnia Root), Qizi (Goji Berry), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Beiweizi (Schisandra Fruit), it treats consumptive disease (Xu Lao). Mixed with glutinous rice powder and taken with rice broth, it treats hematemesis and cough. Using only Sangbaipi treats Pi Shui (Skin Water/Edema).
[Sangye (Mulberry Leaf)]
The qi is cold. The flavor is bitter and sweet. It has slight toxicity. It primarily eliminates chills and fever, and induces sweating.
Sangye has a cold qi, inheriting the winter cold water energy from nature, entering the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Cold Water Meridian). Its flavor is bitter and sweet with slight toxicity, obtaining the southern fire-earth flavor from the earth, thereby possessing drying-dampness properties, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its aroma and flavor descend more than they ascend, belonging to Yin. The Taiyang meridian runs on the surface of the body and serves as the outer barrier of the whole body. The root of Taiyang is cold and its branch is heat; therefore, when Taiyang is diseased, chills and fever occur. Sangye enters the Taiyang meridian; bitterness can clear heat, and sweetness can harmonize, thus eliminating chills and fever. Sweat is the fluid of the Heart, emerging through the Qi transformation of the Bladder. Sangye enters the Bladder meridian and possesses drying-dampness properties, thus inducing sweating.
Prescription Applications:
Sangye combined with Huangqi (Astragalus Root) and Guishen (Angelica Sinensis Root Head) treats body heat due to blood deficiency without sweating. Combined with Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) and Huangqi (Astragalus Root), it treats interior deficiency-cold with incomplete exterior pathogen. Combined with Sesame to form pills, named Sangma Wan (Mulberry Leaf and Sesame Pill), it treats Blood Bi (Blood Stasis Obstruction).
