[Shenqu (Medicated Leaven)]
Nature: Warm. Flavor: Pungent, Sweet. Non-toxic. Primarily functions to transform water and grain undigested food, treat accumulations and masses, strengthen the spleen, and warm the stomach. (Stir-fried until yellow)
Shenqu is warm in nature, inheriting the ascending Wood Qi of spring, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It is pungent and sweet, non-toxic, deriving from the Earth and Metal flavors of the central-western region, entering the Foot Yangming Dry Metal Stomach Earth. Both its aroma and flavor ascend, belonging to Yang. When food enters the stomach, essence is dispersed to the liver. If the liver fails to disperse essence, water and grain stagnate as old accumulation. After long-standing accumulation, tangible knots form internally. Shenqu's warm nature disperses Liver Qi; once Liver Qi is dispersed, old food dissolves and accumulations transform. Once Liver Qi is smooth and unobstructed, Spleen Earth naturally strengthens. The term "Yang" here refers to the Yang Qi of the epigastrium; pungent and warm properties benefit Yang, thus also warming the stomach.
Prescription:
Shenqu combined with Cangzhu Pills strengthens the spleen and dries dampness. Specifically, stir-fry Shenqu until yellow, grind into powder, and take 2 qian with wine to inhibit lactation.
[Cu (Vinegar)]
Nature: Warm. Flavor: Sour. Non-toxic. Primarily functions to dissipate carbuncles and swellings, scatter fluid retention, and neutralize pathogenic toxins.
Cu is warm in nature, inheriting the harmonious Wood Qi of spring, entering the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. It is sour and non-toxic, deriving from the Wood flavor of the East, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its aroma and flavor descend more than they ascend, belonging to Yin. The Liver stores blood; Shaoyang governs Ministerial Fire. If Fire rebels causing blood stasis, carbuncles and swellings arise. The sour flavor astringes, and the warm nature promotes blood circulation, hence external application dissipates carbuncles and swellings. Water fears being controlled by Earth. The sour flavor astringes Wood; when Wood is astringed, Earth extends, thus scattering fluid retention. Pathogenic toxins often belong to "fa wu" (stimulating foods); the sour astringency neutralizes these toxins.
Prescription:
Cu combined with Banxia and egg yolk treats sores in the throat due to Shaoyin disease. Combined with Huangqi, Baishao, and Guizhi, it treats Huanghan (Yellow Sweat). Pouring vinegar onto hot charcoal treats postpartum syncope.
[Jiu (Alcohol/Wine)]
Nature: Very Hot. Flavor: Bitter, Pungent, Sweet. Toxic. Primarily functions to promote the movement of medicinal potency and neutralize various evil toxic vapors.
Jiu is very hot in nature, inheriting the Pure Yang Qi of Heaven, entering the Hand Shaoyang Ministerial Fire Sanjiao Meridian. It is bitter, pungent, and sweet, toxic, deriving from the Fire, Metal, and Earth flavors, possessing a drying and fierce nature. It enters the Foot Yangming Dry Metal Stomach Earth and Hand Yangming Dry Metal Large Intestine Meridians. Its aroma and flavor ascend more than they descend, belonging to Yang. Its Pure Yang nature moves freely without staying static, thus promoting the movement of medicinal potency. The hot nature assists Yang; the pungent and sweet flavors diffuse and disperse, thus neutralizing various evil toxic vapors.
Prescription:
Soaking Yinyanghuo in wine treats lower back pain. Soaking Mujingzi in wine treats deafness.
