Suhe Zi (Styrax Seed), sweet in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats the expulsion of evil qi, kills ghostly essences and objects (pathogenic influences), manages warm malaria (Wen Nue), resolves gu poison (poison caused by venomous creatures or toxins), eliminates epilepsy seizures, removes three types of intestinal parasites, dispels pathogenic factors, prevents nightmares and frights caused by evil intrusion, and unblocks the spirit (Shen). Long-term consumption lightens the body and prolongs life. It grows in the valleys of Zhongtai Mountain.
The world transmits that it is lion feces, but foreigners say otherwise; currently, it all comes from the Western Regions. The genuine product is difficult to distinguish and is no longer used in medicine, serving only for blending fine incense.
Ju You (Citrus Reticulata Peel / Tangerine Peel), pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats masses and heat with rebellious qi in the chest, promotes the digestion of water and grain, directs qi downward, stops vomiting and coughing, clears residual heat in the bladder, eliminates stagnant water, treats five types of strangury (Wu Lin), promotes urination, manages spleen deficiency unable to digest food, qi rushing to the chest causing vomiting and rebellion, cholera-like syndrome (Huo Luan), stops diarrhea, and removes Taenia saginata (Cun Bai Chong). Long-term consumption removes bad breath, directs qi downward, unblocks the spirit, lightens the body, and prolongs life. Also known as Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel). It grows in the valleys of Mount Nan and in Jiangnan. Harvested in October.
This passage describes the efficacy of its peel. Those from the East are considered superior; those from the West River exist but are inferior. The peel is slightly cold. In treating qi stagnation, it is said to surpass Eastern tangerine peel; people in the North also use it, preferring aged specimens. The flesh is sweet and sour; excessive consumption generates phlegm and may not be beneficial to humans. Although the peel is used here, since it belongs to the fruit category, it is appropriate to group it together. Pomelo peel is edible but no longer used in medicine; it should also have the effect of directing qi downward.
Jing Shi (Schizonepeta Spike / Jing Jie Sui), bitter in flavor, slightly cold and slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats blood stasis in the five zang organs, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, abdominal distension with retained heat, bi-syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness, and various pains in the body. It treats hardness below the heart, cold and heat in the diaphragm, generalized bi-syndrome (Zhou Bi), amenorrhea in women, aids digestion, brightens the eyes. Long-term consumption lightens the body, prolongs life, and prevents aging; consuming it allows one to become an immortal. It grows in the valleys of Yongzhou, as well as in Shangdang and along roadsides. Harvest the fruits in October and dry them in the shade. (Its guiding herbs are Jing Shi and Yi Yi Ren.)
It resembles mugwort and artemisia species and is found everywhere in nearby regions. The *Xian Jing* (Immortal Classic) also uses it occasionally; households plant this to repel snakes.
