Taste is sweet, nature is cold, non-toxic. It treats damp-bi (syndrome caused by pathogenic dampness obstructing the meridians), edema of the face and eyes, severe lower-body edema, and five types of hemorrhoids; for those with sores, it should not be consumed as it causes white scars on the skin.
Also known as Li Fish. It grows in the ponds and marshes of Jiujiang, and can be caught at any time.
Now it is written as "Li" character. Old texts say it transforms from male oyster snakes, but there are also cases of mutual generation. It is extremely difficult to kill and still retains snake-like characteristics. Boiled white with adzuki beans, it is used to treat... (text cuts off here)
Taste is salty and sweet, nature is neutral, toxic. It treats leukorrhea with red and white discharge, breaks up zheng and jia (abdominal masses), malaria, five types of hemorrhoids, genital erosion, damp-bi, heaviness and weakness of the four limbs, and failure of the fontanelle to close in children. It treats stubborn head sores that do not dry out, female genital sores, qi stagnation due to fright and anger, abdominal pain preventing prolonged standing, cold and heat sensations in the bones, relapse of shanghan (cold damage disease) due to overexertion, or severe body chills and fever nearing death; making a decoction with it is excellent. Long-term consumption lightens the body, reduces hunger, tonifies qi and enhances intelligence, and also promotes appetite. Also known as Shenwu. It lives in the ponds, marshes of the South Sea, and lakes, and can be harvested at any time. Avoid moisture during storage, as dampness makes it toxic. (Dislikes Adenophorae Radix [Shashen] and Blatta orientalis [Feilian].)
Among these water-dwelling divine turtles, those one chi two cun long are best. The plastron can be used for divination, the carapace for medicine, and it is also used in immortal formulas; when used, it should be roasted.
Urine from live turtles greatly treats chronic cough and can also stop malaria. Turtle meat, made into soup, provides strong nourishment and spiritual benefits; it should not be killed lightly. Books record much about it, which is not detailed here. (Da Guan Vol. 20, Zhenghe p. 413)
Taste is salty, nature is neutral, non-toxic. It treats abdominal zheng and jia, hard accumulations, chills and fever, removes痞 (fullness/blockages), polyps, genital erosion, hemorrhoids, and foul flesh. It treats warm malaria, blood jia, lower back pain, and hardness under the ribs in children. Turtle meat: taste is sweet, treats middle-jiao injury, tonifies qi, and supplements deficiencies. It grows in the ponds and marshes of Danyang and can be harvested at any time. (Dislikes Alum [Fanshi].) Freshly taken turtle shells, with meat scraped off cleanly, are preferred; boiled-off shells are not used. Currently, those with attached plastron and dry rock texture are good. If the shell has exposed bone edges on both sides, it has been boiled; such shells should be roasted before use. In summer, cut softshell turtles, wrap them in Amaranthus tricolor leaves, and place them in damp soil, then they transform into new turtles. Humans wrapping turtle shell powder for five months can also transform them into turtle hatchlings. This meat is insufficient for food and often causes zheng and jia. Those with sunken eyes, or eaten with chicken eggs, are fatal. Do not eat with Amaranthus leaves. Those with a king-character shape under the plastron should also not be eaten.
