[Fish Shell] Pungent in flavor, slightly warm in nature, toxic. It treats abdominal masses and accumulations (Zheng Jia), hidden hard lumps, cold and heat alternating sensations, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea in women, discharge of blood with five colors, pulling pain from the lower abdomen to the yin region, sores, scabies, and necrotic muscle tissue. It treats excessive tearing and drooling caused by the "five evils," sudden fright, heavy pain in the waist, and infant Qi Long (urinary retention) with ulceration. The meat: treats shortness of breath, panting, and inability to stand due to weakness of the feet. It grows in the ponds and marshes of the South Sea; it can be harvested at any time. (Shuqi is its guiding herb; it fears Dog Gallbladder, Genkwa Flower, and Kansui.)
[Cuttlebone] Also known as Tuojia (alligator shell - *Note: Textual anomaly likely referring to Cuttlebone/Hai Piaoxiao*), it should be roasted before use. Its skin can be used to make drums, and its meat is highly nourishing. This creature is extremely difficult to kill; even after being scalded with boiling water and swallowed, it takes a long time to decompose or be peeled. (From Zhenghe, page 431).
Salty in flavor, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats chronic uterine bleeding with red and white discharge, amenorrhea, genital erosion, swelling and pain, cold and heat alternating sensations, abdominal masses, and infertility. It treats fright qi entering the abdomen, abdominal pain circling the umbilicus, cold swelling in the yin region, promotes fertility, and stops suppuration from sores without drying them out. The meat: sour in flavor, neutral in nature, treats Qi deficiency and strengthens willpower. It grows in the ponds and marshes of the East Sea; it can be harvested at any time. (It clashes with Bai Lian and Bai Ji.) This is transformed from the Wu fish; its mouth and legs are still present, resembling the original form. Its bone should also be roasted. The fish contains ink, which is now used to make high-quality ink.
[Crab] Salty in flavor, cold in nature, toxic. It treats painful heat accumulation and evil qi in the chest, deviation of the body, facial swelling, and when burned with spoiled lacquer, attracts mice. It resolves stagnation, disperses blood, heals lacquer dermatitis, nourishes sinews, and benefits Qi. The claws: treat ruptured uterus and induce abortion. It grows in the waters of the Yi and Luo rivers and other ponds; it can be harvested at any time. (It counteracts the toxicity of Datura and Lacquer.) There are many types of crabs, such as Scylla serrata (Youmou), Portunus trituberculatus (Yongjian), and Pengqi, but they are not used in medicine. Only common crabs are most useful; immortal formulas use crab to dissolve lacquer into water for consumption to achieve longevity. If fed black dog's blood and roasted after three days, all mice will gather. Crabs that have not been exposed to frost are very toxic, said to be due to eating water Datura; if humans ingest them and do not treat immediately, death often ensues. Crabs with eyes facing each other can also kill humans; taking winter melon juice, Perilla juice, or Dahuang pills can cure the poisoning. By the sea, there are also Pengqi and Yongjian crabs; they are larger than Pengqi but smaller than common crabs, and are inedible. When Cai Mo first crossed the river, he did not recognize them and ate them, nearly dying. He sighed, saying, "Not having studied Er Ya thoroughly, I was misled by those who advocate learning." (From Daguan, Vol. 21; Zhenghe, page 426).
