Fei (also known as Chiguo)
Sweet in taste. Belongs to Earth and Metal. Non-toxic. Predominantly produced in Yongchang (located in Yunnan Province), also found in various other regions. The tree trunk is thick, requiring two people to embrace it; the leaves are dense, resembling those of a cedar. The fruit resembles an olive in shape, ripens in autumn, turns purplish-brown, and becomes crisp. Picked and dried over gentle fire, it tastes very sweet, delicious, and fragrant when chewed. Zhu Danxi stated: "This is a fruit belonging to the Lung system." It must be roasted before consumption; raw consumption should be limited as it may draw fire into the Lungs. This can damage the Large Intestine, leading to severe diarrhea that is difficult to control. It primarily treats five types of hemorrhoids, enabling their eradication, and kills three types of parasites, rapidly transforming them into fluid. It assists in strengthening bones and sinews, and harmonizes Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi). Avoid consuming it with goose meat, as this combination may cause accumulation masses (Jia) and obstructive wind conditions rising upward. The wood has fine and soft grain, suitable for making vessels.
Pipaye (Loquat Leaf)
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Toxic. Found in Xiangyang, Hanzhong, Fujian, Guangdong, and along roadsides. The tree grows over three meters tall and remains evergreen throughout the four seasons. The leaves resemble donkey ears, with yellow hairs on the underside. Only the leaves are used in medicinal prescriptions. The hairs must be wiped off thoroughly with coarse cloth, then the leaves are crushed, soaked in ginger juice, and lightly roasted until slightly yellow. After chopping and decocting in water, it specifically regulates the Lung Zang. It directs Qi downward, stops persistent vomiting and hiccups, relieves thirst, and treats unceasing heat-induced coughs. The fruit is sweet and sour, moistening the Five Zang organs. Consumed in small amounts, it stops vomiting and thirst; consumed in excess, it induces fever and phlegm production. The white inner bark is also used in medical formulas, treating regurgitation and inability to eat.
Yuliren (Prunus japonica Kernel)
(Synonym: Tangli) Sour and bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Descending in action, representing Yang within Yin. Non-toxic. Frequently cultivated in valleys and hills. Fruits are harvested in June; kernels are extracted by cracking the nuts. Soaked in hot water to remove the skin, then ground into a paste before use. It reduces edema on the body surface and promotes urination; it disperses stagnant Qi in the intestines, immediately resolving Guan-Ge (obstruction syndrome). It breaks blood stasis and moistens dryness, achieving success easily. For swollen and painful gums, rinsing with a concentrated decoction of the root is effective. For toothache caused by wind or parasites, holding it in the mouth eliminates the pain. The fruits are small, sweet-tasting, red when ripe, and edible.
