[Opium Poppy Seed]
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Neutral. Non-toxic. Also known as Yu Mi (Imperial Rice), it is found everywhere. People often plant it in courtyards and pavilions for decoration. The flowers come in two colors: red and white. The fruit contains thousands of seeds in a single capsule. It is also called Mi Nang (Rice Sac), small like Ting Li Zi (Descurainiae Semen). When used in prescriptions, it has miraculous effects. However, it easily disturbs Qi mechanism and affects the Bladder; it must not be used in large doses. It primarily treats thick phlegm stagnation in the chest and diaphragm causing dysphagia and regurgitation of food; it treats excessive heat arising from overconsumption of Dàn Shí (Mineral Drugs), leading to inability to eat. It can be boiled with Zhu Lì (Bamboo Juice) into porridge, taken daily in rotation for self-regulation and peace. (Take one liang of Su Ke (Poppy Shell) and three qian of Wu Mei Rou (Mume Fruit Flesh), grind into powder, and take with decoction of Sang Bai Pi (Morus Root Bark); this is effective.) If suffering from damp-heat diarrhea or dysentery, it must be strictly prohibited. Misuse will deplete healthy Qi, killing as swiftly as a sword.
[Miscellaneous Grain Seeds]
All these grains have a cold nature. Non-toxic. They vary by region of production, but can serve as staple food during famine years. Tu Mi (Glutinous Rice) grows on the ridges of paddy fields; long-term consumption prevents hunger. Jiao Cao Mi (Zizania Latifolia Grain) grows in lakes; it was called a delicacy in ancient times. Ye Lang Wei Zi Mi resembles wheat kernels but is slightly smaller. Peng Cao Zi Mi resembles Jing Mi (Japonica Rice) and is very sticky. Bai Zi Mi (Barnyard Millet) tastes crisp and has a pungent aroma. Dong Qiang Mi (likely referring to a specific local grain or variety) lightens the body and strengthens gait. People in Hexi mistakenly say: "Lend me Dong Qiang [grain], I will repay you with field grain." This refers to this situation.
[Raw Soybean]
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Neutral. Non-toxic. Originally produced in Mount Tai and Ping Ze areas, now grown everywhere. Black and white varieties differ; only black ones are used in medicine. Large and small sizes vary; small grains must be sought for decoction. (Tight and small ones are considered Male Beans, which are effective for medicinal use.) It is incompatible with Long Dan (Gentianae Radix), Wu Shen (Five Ginsengs - specifically Cao Long Dan, Ren Shen, Sha Shen), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Wu Hui (Aconiti Radix Preparata), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and Mu Li (Ostreae Concha). Boiling with Sang Chai Hui Zhi (Ash juice from Mulberry branches) yields immediate results for edema. Mixed with rice and pounded, it can encircle carbuncles and sores to reduce swelling; for women with swollen vulva, it can be inserted internally; decocted and drunk, it kills Gui Zhu (Ghost Taint/Infectious disease) and stops pain; for cramping pain in feet and knees, do not hesitate to take it. Stir-fried and ground into bean dregs, taken with water decoction. It aids digestion, prevents bloating, drives out heat, and removes bi-syndrome.
Additionally, stir-fry until black and smoke is still rising, then throw into hot Dou Lin Jiu (Soybean Dripping Wine) while hot. (This is the ancient formula Dou Lin Jiu, also named Zi Jiu.) It can treat convulsions. Soaking raw beans in water to sprout creates Da Dou Huang Juan (Sprouted Soybean). It removes damp-bi syndrome and cramping pain in bones and tendons, disperses... (text implies dispersing pathogens). Steamed and sun-dried, Jiang Xi region produces and sells them in large quantities. Taste is bland without salt; only effective when used in medicine. Although it regulates miasma qi, it specifically treats headaches; assisting Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), it removes deficiency heat and restlessness. For severe coldness and pain in feet, soaking in strong wine allows tasting. For bloody dysentery with much pain, boil with Xie Bai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus) and take. It still calms the fetus; gynecology practitioners should know this. Tofu has a cold nature and also moves Zheng Qi (Healthy Qi). Excessive consumption causes accumulation; Radish can resolve it. (It effectively resolves tofu toxicity). Dou Qu (Soybean Fermented Curd) can replace grain; it is made by frying soybeans and pounding together with Red Date flesh. Dou Huang (Soybean Hull/Powder) also treats damp-bi; processed into powder and refined with Pig Fat into pills. Dou Jiang (Soybean Paste) mixed... (text fragment) Qi stagnation blocking throat is difficult to treat.
(Chen Jiamo) Commentary: Bean nature is peaceful. Stir-fried eating makes it hot; boiled eating makes it cold. Cows eating it become warm; horses eating it become cool. Within one substance, there are several different effects. Moreover, as food, it has many names. Used to treat pathogenic factors, it is also called an important agent. Furthermore, if boiled with beef, it can test for the presence of plague toxins. Toxin-free beans turn bright yellow when boiled; toxic beans turn dark black. This avoids harm and indeed benefits people. However, regarding its merit in searching for and tonifying Spleen and Stomach, no word has been mentioned. In ancient times, it was called Shu (Soybean), which is also the meaning of 'Bo Shu' (Uncle), implying it is slightly inferior to other grains.
