[Chuzhou Heshi] (Nanophyllum semen / Herba Nanophylli)
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Slightly toxic. Grows abundantly in plains and open fields. The stem is round, about one to two chi high. Leaves are wrinkled and large, resembling Perilla frutescens (Zisu). Flowers are white or yellow, looking like Chrysanthemum indicum (Ganju). Seeds form in the eighth lunar month, small and pointed. After harvest, it can be ground into powder or made into pills; it has strong efficacy in expelling parasites and eliminating toxins. For sudden severe abdominal pain caused by Ascaris lumbricoides (Hui chong) or Enterobius vermicularis (Nao chong), taking it mixed with fat meat juice brings immediate relief. For arsenic poisoning where the stomach and intestines have not yet ruptured, administering a concentrated decoction induces immediate vomiting.
[Suanjiang Shi] (Physalis alkekengi fruit / Fructus Physalis Alkekengi)
Sour in taste, neutral and cold in nature. Non-toxic. Grows everywhere in gardens and fields. White flowers bloom in spring, followed by the formation of green calyx shells. Seeds are contained within the shell, size similar to cherry berries. They turn deep red when fully ripe and can be harvested and eaten in the fifth lunar month. If swallowed by pregnant women, it facilitates safe delivery without worry; if eaten by children, it clears heat and benefits health. Root juice is extremely bitter and easily treats jaundice. Leaves, collected and shade-dried, also promote urination. It stabilizes the mind, tonifies Qi, resolves restlessness, and eliminates irritability.
[Shiwei] (Pyrrosiae Folium / Leaf of Pyrrosia)
Bitter and sweet in taste, neutral and slightly cold in nature. Non-toxic. Those growing densely on rocks in mountain valleys are authentic; those from places where no human voices or water sounds are heard are more effective. Leaves are long and willow-like, with yellow hairs on the back. If these hairs are not removed and enter the lungs, they cause difficult-to-treat coughs. It is essential to remove the hairs completely, then mix with sheep fat; stir-fry until dark yellow before incorporating into prescriptions. It works wondrously with Acorus tatarinowii (Changpu) and effectively with Apricot Kernel (Xingren). It treats enuresis progressing to strangury, unblocks the Bladder, and promotes diuresis. It treats carbuncles and sores on the back, dispels evil wind, and stops irritability. It benefits essence and Qi, supplements five types of exhaustion, eliminates pathogenic heat, and calms the Five Viscera. Those growing on tiles are named Wa Wei. They are also excellent for treating strangury and were recorded in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*.
[Haijinsha] (Lygodii Spora / Spore of Lygodium)
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* does not mention its taste or nature, only stating it originates from Qianzhou (belonging to Yunnan province). Plants are one to two chi high with very small stems. Harvested in the seventh lunar month, the whole plant is collected. On sunny days, spread paper on the ground, place the plant on the paper, and strike it with a stick; fine sand-like spores will fall out. Continue sun-drying and striking until all spores have fallen. Combined with Natrii Sulfas (Xiao) and Borax (Peng Sha), it can treat typhoid fever with high fever and mania. Additional notes state: for urinary retention with fullness and oppression below the umbilicus, use one liang of this herb and five qian of aged tea, grind into an ultra-fine powder, decoct fresh Ginger and the tips of Licorice root, and take three qian mixed in the liquid. If urination remains blocked, administer again, and effect will soon be achieved.
