Oyster shell (Muli, 牡蛎) must be calcined into powder. It is also mixed in equal parts with the root of Ephedra (Mahuanggen, 麻黄根), pounded and ground into an extremely fine powder. For spontaneous sweating (Zi Han, 自汗) and nocturnal sweating (Dao Han, 盗汗), as well as sweating in the genital area (Yin Han, 阴汗), this formula advocates using the raw form, adhering to the original intent of the formula. The medical classics do not originally mention this; it follows only the statement of Tao Hongjing (Tao Yinju, 陶隐居). *Xiyang Zazu* already stated: "The term 'male' (Mu, 牡) in Oyster shell does not refer to its masculinity. Just like Peony flower (Mudan, 牡丹), how could there be a 'female peony'? The current practice aligns with Earth energy: the person faces the Wu position (South), with the apex of the Oyster shell pointing to the Zi position (North). Observing its mouth, if the mouth is on the left, it is called 'Left-Gazing' (Zuogu, 左顾)." However, this creature naturally has no eyes; thus, how can it have gazing movements?
Those collected personally are authentic. Those sold in the market may not all be from mulberry trees. The soaking method described in *Shuben Tujing* is inferior to steaming them slightly before use. A neighbor suffered from urinary frequency, urinating dozens of times a day, with urine resembling thick rice wash water, white in color. He experienced mental confusion, emaciation, and loss of appetite, caused by sexual exhaustion. I prescribed Sangpiaoxiao San (Mulberry Mantis Egg Case Powder) for him, and he recovered before finishing one dose. This formula calms the spirit (An Shenhun, 安神魂), stabilizes willpower (Ding Xinzi, 定心志), treats forgetfulness (Jianwang, 健忘) and urinary frequency, and tonifies Heart Qi (Bu Xinqi, 补心气). Ingredients: Mulberry Mantis Egg Case (Sangpiaoxiao, 桑螵蛸), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi, 远志), Acorus Rhizome (Changpu, 菖蒲), Dragon Bone (Longgu, 龙骨), Ginseng (Renshen, 人参), Poria with Hostwood (Fushen, 茯神), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui, 当归), and Tortoise Shell (Guijia, 龟甲) stir-fried with vinegar. Each ingredient is used in 1 liang. Grind into powder. At night, take 2 qian with Ginseng decoction. If mulberry-based egg cases are unavailable, others may be used, but roasted Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi, 桑白皮) should still be added as an adjunct, in appropriate proportions. The rationale is that Mulberry Root Bark promotes diuresis, intended to guide the Mantis Egg Case into the Kidney Meridian. Such is the intention behind using Sangpiaoxiao. Nevertheless, for treating deficiency syndromes in men and women, benefiting essence, impotence (Yinwei, 阴痿), seminal emission during dreams (Meng Shijing, 梦失精), enuresis (Yiniao, 遗溺), hernia masses (Shanjia, 疝瘕), turbid white urine (Xiaobai Zhuo, 小便白浊), and Kidney decline, it is indispensable.
Chen Cangqi's statement is correct. Since wild geese do not exist in the sea now, how could they excrete clam feces? Clams are edible only when flesh is present inside the shell. If the flesh is gone, how could there be so much material filtered through feces? This theory likely arose because these clams lack sharp edges. In fact, this is due to the daily washing and erosion by wind and waves. To treat cold damage (Shanghan, 伤寒) with profuse sweating and spasms of the limbs, use Sea Clam (Hai Ge, 海蛤) and Sichuan Aconite Root (Chuan Wutou, 川乌头), each 1 liang, and Pangolin Scales (Chuanshanjia, 穿山甲), 2 liang. Grind into powder, mix with wine paste to make pills about 1 cun in size, flatten them, and place under the sole of the affected foot. Cover the medicine with scallion whites and bind tightly with cloth. Soak the feet in hot water up to the knees in a warm room. As the water cools, add more hot water, until the whole body sweats. Soak feet once every one or two days, stopping when effective.
