Those with a suspended hoof at the tail end of the roll. The *Bencao* (Compendium of Materia Medica) uses only food dogs, not hunting dogs or watchdogs that bark to guard homes.
Meat (Yellow dog is superior; black and white are secondary.)
Taste: salty, sour. Nature: warm. (Consumed with garlic, it damages the human body.) Tonifies stomach Qi, strengthens the Yang pathway, warms the waist and knees, and benefits Qi and strength. (Patients with Yin deficiency should generally avoid eating it.) For vacuity-cold malaria, boil yellow dog meat and consume it with five-flavor berry (Wuweizi).
Gallbladder (The gallbladders of yellow and white dogs are good.)
Taste and nature: bitter, neutral; slightly toxic. Treats nasal polyps and ear polyps; when inserted into the ear, it treats deafness. It can break blood stasis and remove accumulations. (For cases of Qi and blood pain and trauma, take half a gallbladder with hot wine; all stasis blood will be discharged.) Treats regurgitation and kills parasites. (Recorded in *Records of the Three Kingdoms*: A woman suffered from itching sores on her left knee. Hua Tuo examined her, tied a rope around the hind legs of a dog, slit its abdomen to remove the gallbladder, and placed it against the sore. Soon, worm-like creatures resembling snakes emerged from the sore, three chi long, and the disease was cured.)
Supplementary Formulas
Regurgitation and vomiting of food, regardless of gender, age, or duration of illness. Use powder of Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi) mixed with yellow dog bile, formed into pills the size of a longan fruit. Take one pill per dose, ground and dissolved in half a cup of fine wine. Effective after three doses.
Abdominal masses and infantile malnutrition (Gan accumulation). Stir-fry Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi) until smoke ceases, and grind real Asafoetida (Awei) after removing sand. Mix equal parts, form pills the size of millet seeds using the bile of a yellow male dog. Swallow thirty pills on an empty stomach with saliva. Avoid mutton, vinegar, and wheat products.
Penis
Taste and nature: salty, neutral. Mainly treats internal injury resulting in impotence and inability to erect, making it strong and hot, facilitating conception. (Its nature specifically tonifies the Minister Fire of the Gate of Vitality [Mingmen].) Treats leukorrhea and twelve types of gynecological disorders in women. (Salty and warm properties enter the Lower Jiao to tonify and warm the deficiency-cold of the Chong and Ren meridians.) Can be used together with Dodder Seed (Tusizi), Raspberry (Fupenzi), Plantain Seed (Cheqianzi), Fish Maw (Yujiao), Morinda Root (Bajitian), Cistanche (Rongshen), Deer Antler (Lujiao), Deer Antler Velvet (Lurong), and Astragalus Complanatus Seed (Shayuanzi).
Contraindicated for those with excessive Yang erection and easy arousal. Not taken by those with internal heat and excess fire. (Note by Miao Zhichun)

[Discussion]
The dog is a Yang animal. In the *Neijing* (Inner Canon), it corresponds to Wood; in the I Ching hexagrams, it corresponds to Gen (Mountain). Between Wood and Earth, which takes precedence? Earth follows Water, serving to stop water flow. Wood follows Earth, serving to skillfully utilize the transformation of Water generating Wood to reach Yang. The Gen hexagram encompasses this. The mystery of creation prioritizes the influx of Qi. This is why the dog corresponds to Wood. Because it corresponds to Wood, the dog is born from the number three (gestation period is three months). The *Bencao* states that its meat tonifies Yang; this is indeed not an arbitrary assertion. Some say, "The dog's liver resembles mud, and its odor is similar; how can we discard Earth and speak only of Wood?" The answer is: This is Earth being utilized by Wood, just as in the year of the ruling Qi of the Heavenly Stem, there is a subordinate Qi that transforms accordingly. This is what is meant by "the dog has no stomach"; it does not mean it lacks physical form, but rather that its Stomach Qi is scant. Stomach Qi belongs to Earth; is this not another proof that Earth follows Wood? Not only is the liver like this; even speaking of the gallbladder, the gallbladders of the five domestic animals lack the main indications of transforming blood and dissipating nodules, whereas only the dog gallbladder possesses these effects. Precisely because of the Qi transformation where Earth serves Wood due to the liver and gallbladder, it can transform blood and kill parasites. Medical texts use it to treat regurgitation, certainly not merely for resolving stagnant blood. In summary, this substance...
Mr. Miao stated: Dog meat assists Yang; when Yang prevails, it generates heat and moves fire, producing phlegm and causing thirst. Those with Yin deficiency and internal heat, or those with abundant phlegm and fire, should avoid it. Epidemic diseases...
