Rainwater at the Beginning of Spring. Plum rain. Entering plum rain occurs on a Ren day after the Grain in Ear芒种 solar term. Exiting plum rain occurs on a Ren day after the Minor Heat小暑 solar term. Liquid rain. Entering liquid rain occurs ten days after the Start of Winter立冬 solar term. Exiting liquid rain occurs at the Light Snow小雪 solar term. Rainfall is referred to as liquid rain. (From *Guang Biji*)
[Discussion] Rainwater at the Beginning of Spring is suitable for decocting herbs that disperse the exterior and tonify the middle and benefit Qi. (Li Shizhen) This is because it obtains the ascending and generating Qi of spring. (Yu Bo) Plum rain is mostly formed by damp-heat Qi stagnating, suppressing, steaming, and fermenting into fine rain. When humans are affected by this Qi, they become ill; when objects are affected, they develop mold. Observing that this water cannot be used to brew wine or vinegar, it follows that plum rain should not be used. (Li Shizhen) Liquid rain is primarily effective in killing insects and is suitable for decocting herbs that kill parasites and eliminate accumulation. (Again) This is because this rain falls in severe winter, when hundred insects hibernate during this period. (Again)
Continuous heavy rain is called *liao* (accumulated floodwater), hence rainwater falling and accumulating is called *liao*. (Li Shizhen)
[Liao Water] Flavor: Sweet; Nature: Neutral. Suitable for decocting herbs that regulate the Spleen and Stomach and remove damp-heat. Zhang Zhongjing treated yellowing due to stagnant heat in cold damage using Mahuang Lianqiao Chixiaodou Decoction (Ephedra, Forsythia, and Adzuki Bean Decoction), using *liao* water for decoction.
Dew Flavor: Sweet; Nature: Neutral. It inherits the Qi of肃杀 (severe/cutting). Suitable for decocting herbs that moisten the Lungs and kill parasites, and for compounding powders to treat scabies, tinea, insect bites, and leprosy. Dew on the heads of hundred herbs can stop [polydipsia/eliminate...] (Note: Text appears truncated here).
The third Wu day after the Winter Solstice is La Day. Flowers generally have five petals, snowflakes have six, which represents the completed number of Yin. Collect it in a clean bottle, pack it tightly, seal the mouth, place it in a cool room away from sunlight. Flavor: Sweet; Nature: Cold. Resolves all toxins. Treats epidemic febrile diseases caused by heavenly qi, infantile hot epilepsy with wild crying, adult reactions to mineral drugs (Dan Shi), sudden heat after drinking alcohol, jaundice, etc. It should still be taken warm in small doses. Suitable for decocting herbs for fire constraint in cold damage; applying it to treat prickly heat is also good.
Flowing Water Two waters flowing eastward for a thousand li can both be used to wash away evil filth and decoct herbal medicines. Lao water is also known as Yangfan water, which Zhang Zhongjing calls Ganlan water (Sweet Ripple Water). Take two dou of flowing water, place it in a large basin, and scoop it up high with a ladle thousands of times until bubbles resembling boiling pearls chase each other. Then take this water for decoction. The nature of water is originally salty and heavy; through labor (agitation), it becomes sweet and light. This is done to avoid assisting Kidney Qi and instead benefit the Spleen and Stomach. Yu Bo stated that Ganlan water is sweet, warm, and soft in nature, and is used when decocting herbs for Yin syndromes in cold damage. Water flowing downstream follows the natural downward flow; it is used for treating lower Jiao waist and knee conditions, and for herbs that promote urination and defecation. Rapid-flowing water has a swift and descending nature; therefore, it is used to promote urination and defecation and...
