Plant it around the residence. The stem is two or three chi high. It is flexible yet jointed. It resembles a vine but is not actually a vine. The leaves are as large as a fist. The root is about one chi long and two cun in circumference. The outer bark is brownish and the inner part is yellowish. There are also varieties with yellow-red color. Crush its root and put it into the indigo dye vat. It is said that this facilitates color change. Huangyaozi (Yellow Medicinal Root) and Hongyaoyaozi (Red Medicinal Root) are two names for the same substance. The seeds are also used in medical formularies, though it is uncertain what specific plant they refer to.
Root
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Neutral implies a cooling property. The qi is thin while the flavor is strong. Descending action predominates over ascending. It belongs to Yin. It enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. It cools blood and descends fire. It treats lung heat with coughing up of bloody sputum, epistaxis, lingual bleeding, tongue swelling, and sore throat and swelling. It treats various malignant swellings and sores. It resolves goiter. (This does not exceed the principles of cooling blood, harmonizing nutritive qi, and dissipating nodules.)

It is effective for treating all types of back carbuncles and furuncles. It is particularly important for yin toxicity. If Hongyaoyaozi is unavailable, substitute with Huangyaozi. For hematemesis and hemoptysis, it can relieve various heat-induced restlessness.

[Discussion] The root of Huangyao has a bitter taste and neutral nature. Bitterness corresponds to the Fire element's flavor. Neutrality corresponds to the Metal element's qi. When Fire and Metal combine to exert their effects, the qi tends toward cooling and descending. Cooling and descending qi transforms blood.
Metal and Fire descend into Water.
According to Master Miao, when carbuncles and furuncles have already ulcerated, internal administration is contraindicated. For yin syndromes, internal tonification should be prioritized. Substances like Yaoyaozi should be taken in small amounts; they may only be applied externally.
In the third lunar month, shoots emerge. The vines have many tendrils. The leaves are round, shaped like a horse's hoof but pointed at the tip. The upper surface is green and the underside is pale. The texture is rough and not smooth. In the sixth and seventh months, small yellow flowers with five petals bloom in clusters. They bear abundant fruit. When ripe, the fruits display red and yellow colors. The skin is also rough and涩 (astringent). The root resembles smaller Trichosanthis Radix (Gualou Gen). The extracted starch is very white and fine.
