Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Place a sheet of thick paper, spread softened Qiai (Qimin Mugwort Herb) on it, sprinkle the powder onto the mugwort, and roll tightly. Store any number (five or ten) in a jar, buried in a high, shaded place for one hundred days before use. When encountering various wind syndromes, take one such roll, called "Fire Needle," dip it in oil, ignite it, and blow it out. While hot, wrap the tip in a hundred layers of paper and press it against the affected area to moxa-iron it; symptoms will dissipate immediately with miraculous effect. Grind into a fine powder, mix together, wrap in paper, and process by roasting/smoking. (Ibid.)
If arsenic trioxide (Pishuang, 砒霜) application causes pain or ulceration at the site, frequently apply and replace wet mud. If the toxin enters the abdomen causing chest discomfort, vomiting, or diarrhea, drinking one or two cups of cold rice vinegar will stop it; even more is harmless. Raw mung bean powder or sesame oil are also acceptable. If realgar application causes confusion, vomiting, or diarrhea, decoct Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) in water to antidote it. If croton seed application causes pain and muscle ulceration, grind fresh Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) into powder, mix with water, and apply externally. If toxins enter internally causing vomiting and diarrhea, take one or two qian of the water-mixed Huanglian powder orally; soybeans or Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) juice are also suitable. If Veratrum nigrum causes internal toxicity, decoct scallion soup to antidote it. (*Liuyang Jiyao*, Key Principles of Leprosy)
Zihehe stated in his writings: The *Neijing* discusses leprosy, stating that needle treatment over two hundred days can regenerate eyebrows; needle therapy acts similarly to inducing sweating. However, when no medicine is available, using needles, one instance of sweating is equivalent to a thousand needle treatments. Thus, Gongongfeng once treated paralysis-wind syndrome using Cai Ping’s method to induce sweating. (Note: This comes from *Shixing Sanliao*, Ten Forms and Three Therapies.) Magistrate Zhang suffered from leprosy... (seen above). Another person suffered from wind syndrome with blackened face, incessant scratching, and lost eyebrows. Needling the face caused dark, ink-like blood to flow profusely; after three needlings, the blood color changed. Each session involved needling from forehead to chin, arranging needles vertically and horizontally. Needled every other day until stopping after twenty-plus days. Note: This discussion posits that *Neijing* needle therapy is akin to sweating, and bleeding is also akin to sweating. Since leprosy affects meridians and the exterior, needle therapy and sweating are appropriate. Because evil blood stagnates, bleeding is indicated, either at swelling sites or at Weizhong (BL-40). Additionally, since the intestines and stomach contain filth and parasites, purgation is indicated. Generally, these methods vent and drain pathogenic heat and toxins from the interior and exterior blood and qi. (*Weiyi*, Subtle Meanings)
The bian-stoning and needling methods for leprosy ulcers: Mr. Zhang Zihe claimed one sweat equals a thousand needles, implying that bleeding via bian-stoning is less comprehensive than sweating. However, sweating is bleeding, and bleeding is sweating; they are essentially the same. If evil blood stagnates in the superficial meridians of the skin, needling and sweating are indicated; bleeding from Weizhong (BL-40) is effective. If toxic pathogens accumulate in the zang organs, internal cleansing is required for recovery. If toxins are external, bian-stoning across all affected areas, wrists, ankles, and finger/toe webs to bleed is necessary to disperse the toxin. If both interior and exterior are infected, external bian-stoning and internal purging are required to eliminate the toxin. For upper body predominance, Zuixian San (Immortal Drunk Powder) is indicated to expel accumulated evil blood through the gums, combined with needling finger webs and arm wrists to remove superficial toxic blood. For lower body predominance, Zaizao San (Recreation Powder) is indicated to transform evil blood into worms expelled via the anus, combined with needling toe webs and leg ankles, repeated every one or two days until the blood turns red. (*Liuyang Jiyao*, Key Principles of Leprosy) (Note: Zuixian and Zaizao formulas treat upper and lower bodies respectively, according to Zhu Danxi, seen above.)
Blood is yin, Qi is yang. In wind-disease (Fengzheng, 疯症), Qi disorders are often fewer, while Blood disorders are frequent. Tianyi Water (Kidney Water) is refined by Bingding Fire (Heart Fire), so the correct blood color is red. With deficiency, the color is pale; with cold, it is cyan; with heat, it is purple; with corruption, it is black. Black is untreatable because it signifies total transformation away from the original nature of blood. Treating wind-disease requires utmost attention to the Blood aspect. Just as the earth relies on rivers and seas for moisture, and plants rely on rain and dew, blood nourishes the human body. The Liver stores blood, the Heart commands blood, and the Spleen nurtures blood; it circulates through zang-fu organs and irrigates meridians. Bones, sinews, interior, and exterior are all nourished by blood. Blood disease affects the whole body. To treat wind-disease, one must first treat the blood; without treating blood, there is no entry point for treatment. This explains why needling techniques must be precise. First, remove evil toxins, then administer medicines for regulation and maintenance, allowing new blood to generate easily. (*Liuyang Quanshu*, Complete Book of Leprosy)
Ancient needle and bian therapies were miraculous, but needles penetrate deeply and bian stones extract heavily. Leprosy specifically emphasizes needling. Surface muscle sensations of numbness, itching, or hardness indicate congealed evil blood and blocked true qi. One must use needling (superficial extraction) to gradually remove evil blood, restoring health. Even if not aiming for heavy bleeding, it promotes qi circulation. Repeat needling every few days until the blood is bright red and sensation returns. Needle, bian, and moxibustion methods are only temporary measures and not routinely used in leprosy. Needling is the primary step. Combined with topical applications, inflamed muscles flatten, redness fades, numbness returns to sensitivity, and nodules become healthy tissue, achieving masterful results. Red, active blood does not require needling; deficient blood should not be needled. (Ibid.)
The *Neijing* treats "needle" and "stab" as one method, but semantically they differ slightly. "Needle" targets acupoints; "Stab" targets the skin. Needles unblock meridians and apply tonification/sedation; stabs remove evil blood and stubborn numbness. Thus, *Lingshu* features nine needles diagrams, and surgery utilizes scalpel needles, throat needles, and three-edged needles. Current wind-disease practice uses two types:
1. "Needle": For early or mild cases with skin numbness, lack of pain/itch sensation, and cloud-like erythema (not exceeding bowl size or foot diameter). Depressed, white lesions are most severe. Use this needle for light, arranged stabs at the site until bleeding occurs and blood coagulates ("Gui", returning/stopping). Apply Hongfendan externally to stop bleeding and form scabs. Twice monthly until pain returns and blood is bright red.
2. "Zan Needle" (Cluster Needle): For chronic cases with widespread stubborn numbness and thickened skin/muscle. Use deep, forceful pounding stabs to cause profuse evil blood drainage. Wipe and repeat. Twice monthly until skin flattens and whitens.
For generalized cases, focus on onset points, severe areas, and Bayexue (Eight Holes Acupoints - verify original text). Atrophy, spasms, and curling are excluded from needling. Avoid tendons during needling. Observe that obese individuals have more muscle, while thin individuals have prominent tendons. (Ibid.)
Hongfendan (Red Powder Pill), used to stop bleeding after needling various wind-diseases.
Ruan Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, ground, one tael), Qiandan (Minium, washed and fried, three qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar, water-ground, one qian), Qingfen (Calomelas, one qian five fen), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum, one fen), Shexiang (Moschus, one fen).
Grind into fine powder and store in porcelain. (Ibid.)
Moxibustion: For leprosy, *Qianjin* contains many formulas, some effective, some not. Moxibustion on Quchi (LI-11), Hegu (LI-4), Zusanli (ST-36), and Jiexgu (GB-39) is particularly good, as pressing these points causes soreness in me and others. (*Zisheng Jing*, Nourishing Life Classic)
First, consume Huapi San (Birch Bark Powder), increasing dosage gradually, for five to seven days. Then moxa Chengjiang (CV-24) seven moxa cones. After the moxa wound heals, moxa again. After healing again, moxa a third time. Then take Ersheng San (Two Sages Powder - note: equivalent to Qianjin San from *Shengji Zonglu*). Clears heat, removes wind-pathogens from blood. (*Huofa Jiyao*, Key Principles of Living Methods)
