Turnip greens, etc. (From *Shengji Zonglu*). *Liangpeng Huiji* treats adult Qi-type wind, lamb-style wind (epilepsy), stroke with phlegm obstruction, and pediatric acute convulsive wind. It uses ten taels of raw gypsum and five qian of cinnabar, ground into fine powder. For each dose, adults take three qian, children take one qian.
Anhun Dingpo Dan (Soul-Calming Pill) treats epilepsy caused by fright pathogens, epidemic febrile diseases, and manic confusion due to disturbed heart spirit; it is effective in all cases. (Note: This is essentially Yangzheng Dan from *Heji Jufang*, minus cinnabar). It is prepared by mixing the ingredients with soft rice to form pills the size of mung beans. Each dose consists of seven pills ground in fresh well water and taken orally. (From *Jifeng Puji Fang*). Baodan Wan (Gallbladder-Protecting Pill) from *Shizhai Baiyi Xuanfang* treats all types of epilepsy, mania, and wind-stroke, whether caused by fright, terror, or excessive thinking. Raw frankincense is added to this base formula.
Zhang Huan's Xiongdan Dan (Bear Gallbladder Pill) treats epilepsy, having the effects of calming the heart and soothing the spirit.
True bear gallbladder bile, Iron powder (each finely ground), Cinnabar (finely ground and washed with water), Raw Arisaema cum Baccate (ground into powder), Realgar (water-ground to extract the pure essence, separately ground, half a tael each), Frost powder (one fen, ground), Camphor and Musk (each one qian, ground).
Mix these ingredients thoroughly. Take the juice from one pig gallbladder to bind the herbs into pills the size of millet seeds. Each dose is ten to twenty pills, taken with a decoction of silver mint. (From *Youyou Xinshu*).
Empirical Pill Formula for Treating Epilepsy.
Ox-bile processed Arisaema (eight qian), True Calculus Bovis (four qian), Chen Sha (Cinnabar) (three qian), True Musk (three fen).
Boil liquorice paste as a binder to form pills the size of Euryale seeds, coated with gold leaf. Take five pills with mint tea. (From *Chishui Xuanzhu*).
For the five types of epilepsy, use two large fat bats. Stuff five qian of Chen Sha (Cinnabar) into each bat's mouth. Cover with tiles on all sides and dry slowly over low fire. Grind into powder, bind with rice paste to form pills, and take with rice soup. Vomiting the phlegm out is considered excellent. (From *Ruyi Fang*) (Note: Used as a powder in *Yixue Jicheng*).
Various Formulas for Unblocking Meridians and Clearing the Heart: Treats accumulation of qi from sorrow and fear, wind pathogen invading the heart. Upon onset, there is jaw stiffness, flooding of saliva, and coma. After waking, the spirit appears dull and foolish. This is called Jingqi Wan (Fright-Qi Pill).
Prepared Aconite root (peeled and de-navelled), Southern Costus root, White Silkworm (de-silked and stir-fried), Flower snake (soaked in wine, skin and bones removed, roasted), Tangerine peel, Gastrodia elata (rhizome removed).
Ephedrae Herba (roots and joints removed, half a tael each), Dried Scorpion (one tael, detoxified), Perilla Seed (one tael, washed), Arisaema cum Baccate (washed, soaked, sliced thinly, soaked in ginger juice overnight, half a tael), Cinnabar (water-washed, one fen, reserved a small amount for coating).
Grind all into powder. Add a small amount of ground camphor and musk, mix extremely uniformly. Use refined honey to knead into pills the size of longan fruits. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in silver mint decoction; warm wine may also be used. This is my family's secret prescription. In the year Wushen, a soldier in the army broke the law and was stripped naked, about to be executed, but was pardoned. His spirit was lost, appearing foolish. I gave him one pill; after taking it, he slept. Upon waking, his illness had vanished. Zhang Zaiyang, Inspector General of Jiangdong, had a wife who had suffered from mental loss due to fleeing bandits for several years. I prescribed this formula; she recovered before finishing one course. Yan, Inspector of Huangshan Wo, had a wife suffering from mania and syncope for over a year, treated by more than ten physicians without success. I prescribed this formula, removing Aconite and adding Iron powder; she recovered before finishing one course. Iron powder not only transforms phlegm and calms the heart but is particularly effective in suppressing liver pathology. If anger injures the liver and the pathogen is too strong, Iron powder can subdue it. *Suwen* states that for yang syncope with mania, Tieluo Yin (Iron Filings Decoction) is used, representing the principle of Metal controlling Wood. This insight was not discussed by predecessors. (From *Benshi Fang*) (Note: *Yizong Jinjian* states: Phlegm in epilepsy knots between the heart and chest, often triggered by fire. Is it not necessary for the hot nature of Aconite, which moves freely and does not stay put, to circulate stagnation and disperse stubborn knots? This is a contrary treatment method, belonging to coercive agents.)
*Chenxiang Tianma Tang* (Agarwood and Gastrodia Decoction) from *Baojian* treats epilepsy with muscle spasms.
Agarwood, Alpinia oxyphylla fruit, Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root (each two qian), Gastrodia elata, Saposhnikovia root, Pinellia ternata, Prepared Aconite root (each three qian), Notopterygium root (five qian), Liquorice root, Angelica sinensis root.
Bombyx Batryticatus (each one and a half qian), Angelica pubescens root (one qian).
Cut into pieces. Take five qian per dose, with two cups of water and three slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until one cup remains, strain, and take warm before meals. Three doses result in cure. (From *Weiyi*) (Note: Luo’s formula was originally designed for children. Xu incorporated it into the adult section as a remedy for critical conditions, so it is listed here today. Also, *Baojian* originally wrote "ginger residue" instead of Bombyx Batryticatus; using Bombyx Batryticatus is more convenient now.)
Cuigan Wan (Liver-Crushing Pill) suppresses fire, soothes the liver, resolves phlegm, and stops tremors.
Ox-bile processed Arisaema, Uncaria rhynchophylla, Coptis chinensis (stir-fried with wine), Talcum (water-washed), Ferrum Hydroxidum Cum Hydrato (each one tael), Indigo Naturalis (three qian), Bombyx Batryticatus (stir-fried, five qian).
Gastrodia elata (wine-washed, two taels), Chen Sha (Cinnabar, water-washed, five qian), Large Liquorice root (two qian).
Grind into powder. Use one bowl of bamboo sap and a little ginger juice to make a paste for binding, forming pills the size of mung beans. Take one qian and five fen with tea after meals and at night. Avoid chicken and mutton meat. (From *Zhunsheng*) (Note: This formula originally appeared in the chapter on Tremors, but since it soothes liver rebellion and treats mania and epilepsy generally, it is listed here again.)
Qingshen Tang (Spirit-Clearing Decoction) treats heart heat and phlegm confusing the pericardium collaterals.
Poria cocos with hostwood (skin and wood removed), Coptis chinensis (each two qian), Ziziphus jujuba seed (stir-fried), Acorus tatarinowii, Biota orientalis seed (stir-fried), Polygala tenuifolia root (each five qian, boiled together with liquorice, bone removed).
Liquorice root (five fen).
Use two zhong of water, decoct until eight fen remains. Take far after meals. (From *Tongzhi*).
Gouteng Tang (Uncaria Decoction) treats various epileptic spasms.
Tangerine peel, Uncaria rhynchophylla, Bile-processed Arisaema, Gastrodia elata, Bombyx Batryticatus, Ginseng root, Polygala tenuifolia root, Rhinoceros horn (modern substitute: Water buffalo horn), Acorus tatarinowii.
Decoct with Centella asiatica herb in water. Before taking, add Calculus Bovis and Pearl powder. (From *Jinnang*).
Moxibustion Method: Someone suffered from epilepsy, falling stiffly to the ground upon onset and recovering only after a long time. I suspected it was caused by mental exertion, so I moxaized Baihui (GV20). Suspecting phlegm syncope caused the fall, I also moxaized Zhongwan (CV12). The condition decreased slightly but was not cured. Later, reading *Maijue*, Tong Zhenzi mentioned protecting Fengchi (GB20) when caring for children. When people sought moxibustion for epilepsy, I would always press Fengchi (GB20); it was invariably tender. Moxibustion then led to recovery. (From *Zisheng Jing*).
[Appendix] Tremors and Shaking. "Chan" means shaking. "Zhen" means vibrating. It is an image of wind and fire multiplying, causing movement. Compared to wind-spasm, its intensity is slower. *Neijing* states: All wind-induced trembling and dizziness belong to the Liver. "Diao" refers to tremors and shaking. This syndrome is commonly seen accompanying cold damage, febrile diseases, and dysentery, caused by severe heat. Deficiency patterns also occur. In both, the trembling is light and agile without weakness, differing slightly from stroke where limbs are dragged and movements are heavy and slow. (From *Gangmu*).
Tremors are similar to wind-spasm, but in wind-spasm, limbs are pulled and flexed or extended, whereas in tremors, there is only quivering without flexion or extension. For tremors due to qi deficiency, use Shen Zhu Tang to tonify it (this is Yigong San plus Astragalus; add Aconite if severe). For tremors due to heart deficiency, use Buxin Wan to nourish it (using Angelica sinensis, Liquorice, Ginseng, Rehmannia glutinosa, Polygala tenuifolia, Ziziphus jujuba seed, Biota orientalis seed, Cinnabar, Gold leaf, Musk, Amber, Poria cocos, Ligusticum chuanxiong, Acorus tatarinowii, Ox-bile processed Arisaema). If accompanied by phlegm, use Daotan Tang plus bamboo sap. For tremors due to excess heat and accumulation, purging and vomiting methods are appropriate. For elderly patients with trembling, use Dingzhen Wan. (*Tongzhi*) (Dingzhen Wan uses Siwu Tang plus Gastrodia elata, Gentiana macrophylla, Full scorpion, Asarum, Schizonepeta, Saposhnikovia, Atractylodes macrocephala, Astragalus, and Notopterygium root.)
Tremors involve shaking of hands and feet, resembling shivering, where tendons and vessels cannot restrain themselves, making it impossible to hold weight. This is a sign of wind. *Neijing* states: All wind-induced dizziness and trembling belong to Liver Wood. The Liver governs wind; wind is yang qi, and yang is active. This is excessive Wood qi overcoming Spleen Earth. The Spleen governs the four limbs, which are the extremities of all yang meridians. The drumming of Wood qi causes movement. The classics refer to this as wind damaging the extremities. There are cases where only the head moves while limbs remain still. The head is the summit of all yang meridians; when Wood qi rushes upward, only the head moves. When dispersed to the four extremities, the limbs move while the head remains still. This disease is rare in young adults, appearing after middle age, and is common in the elderly. Elderly patients have insufficient yin blood; insufficient water cannot control flourishing fire, making it extremely difficult to treat. Predecessors rarely addressed this. Only Zhang Dairen treated an old man named Ma from Xinzhai, treating it as combined Wood-Fire and phlegm, achieving success. Those encountering this syndrome should refer to his principles and apply careful thought. (From *Zhunsheng*) (Note: Dairen’s case record is in *Shixing Sanliao*, using Tongsheng San and emetic methods.)
The pulse for tremors: small, weak, slow, and slippery pulses are treatable. Empty, large, rapid, and urgent pulses indicate untreatable conditions. Occasionally, deep, hidden, and choppy pulses appear, indicating phlegm-dampness stagnation internally. (From *Yitong*)
