My commentary: The preceding formula is an excellent remedy for pain caused by Qi stagnation and blood stasis resulting from sprains, strains, or anger. The Classic states: Injury to the form causes pain; injury to Qi causes swelling. It also states: Swelling preceding pain indicates that injury to the form has affected Qi; pain preceding swelling indicates that injury to Qi has affected the form. If a person’s Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is inherently weak, or if Qi and Blood are damaged by shouting, or if harsh purgatives have been overused, or if cold-cooling herbs have been applied externally leading to Qi and Blood coagulation, one should examine the general principles mentioned above and employ warming and tonifying methods for Qi and Blood.
