The Gegen Shengma Decoction from the *Jufang* (Formulas of the Bureau of Taiping Renmin Hospital) consists of Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zisu (Perillae Folium), and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix). Adding Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) yields excellent results for treating epidemic colds and flu. (Ge Gen, Sheng Ma, Chen Pi, Gan Cao, Chuan Xiong, Bai Zhi, Zi Su, Ma Huang, Chi Shao, and Xiang Fu are used in equal parts, decocted with Sheng Jiang [Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens] and Cong Bai [Allii Fistulosi Bulbus]. It treats simultaneous contraction of Wind-Cold affecting both Taiyang and Yangming meridians, manifesting as headache, fever, absence of sweating, aversion to cold, cough, and nasal congestion. Chuan Xiong, Ma Huang, Sheng Ma, Ge Gen, Zi Su, Bai Zhi, and Xiang Fu are acrid and aromatic, promoting Qi circulation, releasing the exterior, and dispersing Cold. The addition of Shaoyao [Paeoniae Radix] constrains Yin Qi during diaphoresis; the addition of Gancao harmonizes Yang Qi amidst the dispersing and draining agents. Wu Shou stated: This formula uses Sheng Ma and Ge Gen to resolve Yangming epidemic pathogens. If used for Taiyang Cold Damage with fever, it may draw pathogenic factors into the Yangming meridian, leading to transmission and the appearance of macules; caution is advised!)
The Shenhu San (Divine Skill Powder) from the *Jufang* utilizes Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gancao, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Bencao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma), Baizhi, Chuanxiong, and Qianghuo (Saposhnikoviae Radix). (Cang Zhu 2 liang, Zhi Gan Cao [Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma], Xi Xin, Ben Cao, Bai Zhi, Chuan Xiong, and Qiang Huo each 1 liang; take 4 qian per dose, decocted with Sheng Jiang and Cong Bai.) Each herb targets a specific meridian to dispel Wind-Dampness (Taiyin uses Cang Zhu, Shaoyin uses Xi Xin, Jueyin and Shaoyang use Chuan Xiong, Taiyang uses Qiang Huo and Ben Cao, Yangming uses Bai Zhi. This formula shares the same intent as Jiwei Qianghuo Tang [Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction], but adds Ben Cao and removes Huangqin [Scutellariae Radix], Shengdi [Rehmanniae Radix], and Fangfeng [Saposhnikoviae Radix], making it more stable than Qianghuo Tang.). It is also suitable for diarrhea caused by Wind-Cold.
Taiwu Shenhu San ("Taiwu" was the teacher of Zhu Danxi) is essentially Pingwei San [Regulate the Stomach Powder] with the addition of Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) and Huoxiang (Pogostemonis Herba). (Chen Pi as the sovereign herb 2 qian, Cang Zhu and Houpo [Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex] each 1 qian, Zhi Gan Cao, Shi Chang Pu, and Huo Xiang each 1.5 qian. It treats mountain miasma, epidemic malaria, and seasonal pathogens.)
Haicang Shenhu San consists of Cangzhu, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Gancao. It serves as a substitute for Mahuang Tang [Ephedra Decoction] in cases of Taiyang disease without sweating. (Cang Zhu and Fang Feng each 2 liang, Zhi Gan Cao 1 liang. Used to replace Zhang Zhongjing's Mahuang Tang for treating Taiyang Cold Damage with absence of sweating.) If Cangzhu is replaced by Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), it becomes an excellent formula for Taiyang disease with sweating. (Named Baizhu Tang, it substitutes Guizhi Tang [Cinnamon Twig Decoction] for treating Taiyang Wind Strike with sweating. The therapeutic actions of Baizhu and Cangzhu are similar, differing only in their effects on arresting sweating versus inducing diaphoresis.)
