Huaishan San (Sophora Flower Powder) is used to treat intestinal wind bleeding. The formula primarily consists of Cacumen Platycladi (Cebaiye), Blackened Radix Saposhnikoviae (Heijingjie), and Fructus Aurantii (Zhike). These are ground into an equal-part powder and taken with rice water, demonstrating the efficacy of widening the intestines, cooling blood, and dispelling wind. (Within this context, Flos Sophorae (Huaihua) and Cacumen Platycladi (Baiye) cool the blood; Zhi Shi (Aurantium Fructus Immaturus) widens the intestines; Jing Jie regulates blood and disperses wind.)
Xiaojidan Yin (Small Thistle Decoction) treats bloody strangury due to heat accumulation. It contains Stir-fried Blackened Semen Lygodii (Puhuang), Caulis Akebiae (Mutong), Talcum (Shishi), and Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdi). Added to these are Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao), Fructus Gardeniae Preparata (Heizhi), and Folium Bambusae in Temulo (Danzhuye). When decocted in equal parts, it is highly effective for bloody strangury and heat binding. (Xiaoji and Rhizoma Nelumbinis (Oujie) dissipate blood stasis; Shengdi cools blood; Puhuang stops bleeding; Mutong drains heart fire and directs it to the small intestine; Zhizi disperses constrained fire.)
The formula from *Jisheng Fang* utilizes three types of leaves: Cacumen Platycladi (Cebaiye), Folium Artemisiae Argyi (Aiye), Folium Nelumbinis (Heye), and Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Shengdi). These are taken in equal parts, freshly pounded into a paste, and decocted to stop epistaxis caused by reckless movement of hot blood. (Cebaiye and Shengdi nourish yin and cool blood; Heye dissipates stasis while retaining healthy blood; fresh Aiye is warm in nature, regulating qi and stopping bleeding.)
The formula from *Faming* (Repatriation of Vitality Decoction) treats traumatic injury and blood stasis, containing Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu), Rhizoma Anemarrhenae (Huafen), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), and Squama Manis (Shanjia). It also includes Semen Persicae (Taoren), Flos Carthami (Honghua), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang), and Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao). Decocted in wine, it expels blood stasis from injuries. (Dosage: Chaihu 15g, Huafen, Danggui, processed Squama Manis, Gancao, and Honghua each 6g, Tao Ren 50 kernels (skin removed, tips discarded, ground), Dahuang 30g. Take 30g per dose, decocted in wine. Since accumulated blood tends to dry out, and the hypochondrium belongs to the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, Chaihu serves as the sovereign herb to guide the action. Danggui invigorates the blood vessels, Gancao relieves urgency, while Dahuang, Tao Ren, Honghua, Shanjia, and Huafen break up stasis and moisten dryness.)
Twelfth Verse and Four Supplementary Formulas: Xiaoxuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) treats stroke involving the six meridians. It contains Ramulus Cinnamomi (Guizhi), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi), Radix Chuanxiong (Xiong), Herba Ephedrae (Mahuang), Radix Ginseng (Renshen), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren), and Herba Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng). Additionally, it includes Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin), Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae (Fangji), and Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao). This formula effectively treats all six meridians affected by wind. (It comprehensively treats facial paralysis, limb immobility, slurred speech, and both rigid and flaccid spasms, as well as damp-wind affecting the Jueyin meridian. Composition: Fangfeng 3.75g, Guizhi, Mahuang, Renshen, Shaoyao (wine-fried), Xingren (stir-fried and ground), Chuanxiong (wine-rinsed), Huangqin (wine-rinsed), Fangji, and Gancao (honey-fried) each 2.5g, Fuzi 1.25g, decocted with Ginger and Jujube. Mahuang combined with Xingren constitutes Mahuang Tang, treating cold; Guizhi combined with Shaoyao constitutes Guizhi Tang, treating wind. Renshen and Gancao tonify qi; Xiong and Shaoyao nourish blood; Fangfeng treats wind pathogenic factors; Fangji treats damp pathogenic factors; Fuzi treats cold pathogenic factors; Huangqin treats heat pathogenic factors. Thus, it is a comprehensive formula for treating wind disorders. Liu Zongnong commented: "This formula does not distinguish between meridians or differentiate between cold, heat, deficiency, and excess; despite its versatility, what is its true value?" Wang Ang noted: "Although rarely used today, most historical formulas for treating wind disorders were derived from modifications of this base formula.")
