(Fangfeng Tongsheng San, from Liu Hejian) The formula contains Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Xiaoshi (Mirabilite), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Baishao (White Peony Root), and Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit). It also includes Gancao (Licorice Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Huashi (Talcum), Bohe (Mentha Haplocalyx), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), with the latter three being particularly potent. This formula attacks both the exterior and interior, overcoming excessive Yang-heat, and is effective in resolving toxic sores and ulcers in surgery. [Prescription: Jiuzheng Dahuang (Wine-steamed Rhubarb Rhizome), Mangxiao (Mirabilite), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Heizhi (Black Gardenia Fruit), Chaobaishao (Stir-fried White Peony Root), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Bohe (Mentha Haplocalyx), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) each 5 qian; Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) each 1 liang; Gancao (Licorice Root) 2 liang; Huashi (Talcum) 3 liang. Decoct with fresh ginger and scallion. Jingjie, Fangfeng, Mahuang, and Bohe induce sweating to disperse heat, toxins, and wind; Zhizi, Huashi, Mangxiao, and Dahuang promote urination and defecation to descend fire and move water; Huangqin, Jiegeng, and Shigao clear the Lung and purge Stomach heat; Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Baishao nourish blood and tonify the Liver; Lianqiao disperses Qi stagnation and blood coagulation; Gancao and Baizhu tonify the Middle and dry dampness. Thus, it induces sweat without damaging the exterior, and purges without damaging the interior.]
(Wuzhi San, from "Ju Fang"), treats five types of accumulation (Hanji/Cold Accumulation, Shiji/Food Accumulation, Qiji/Qi Accumulation, Xueji/Blood Accumulation, Tanji/Phlegm Accumulation). The formula uses Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Baishao (White Peony Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), and Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome). Add Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Gancao (Licorice Root), Fuling (Poria), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), decocted with fresh ginger and scallion. [Prescription: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Baishao (White Peony Root), Fuling (Poria), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) each 8 fen; Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Nongpu (Thick Magnolia Bark), Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) each 6 fen; Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit) 7 fen; Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) each 4 fen; Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Gancao (Licorice Root) each 3 fen. If the exterior syndrome is severe, use Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) instead of Rougui. Rougui and Mahuang release the exterior and dispel cold; Gancao and Baishao harmonize the interior and relieve pain; Cangzhu and Houping calm the Stomach; Chenpi and Banxia move phlegm; Chuanxiong and Danggui nourish blood; Fuling promotes diuresis; Ganjiang and Baizhi dispel cold-dampness; Zhike and Jiegeng benefit the diaphragm and intestines. One formula governs multiple diseases; its efficacy depends on the skilled practitioner's ability to adapt it flexibly.] Except for Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), and Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), the remaining herbs are slightly stir-fried (these three are used raw, while others are lightly stir-fried, known as Shuliao Wuzhi San/Raw-Material Five Accumulations Powder). The Shuliao version further enhances its warming and dispersing efficacy. It warms the Middle, releases the exterior, dispels cold-dampness, resolves palpitations/fullness, and regulates menstruation, serving various purposes. [Tao Jian'an stated: For any Yin-pattern Cold Damage, whether the pulse is floating or sunken but forceless, this formula should be administered, and Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root) may be added.]
