The names of the nostrils: The tip of the nasal alae is called "Zhuntou" (Accurate Head). The area lateral to the eye corners (referring to the sides of the nose) is called "Daxiao" (Large and Small). The central acupoint at the root of the nose is named "Shangen" (Mountain Root, located between the inner canthi, belonging to the Du Meridian). If the nostrils are black like coal, this indicates scorching and withering of the Lung Meridian. If the color is black and dry like ink, it signifies the exhaustion of Lung Qi; such conditions are difficult to treat.
Redness and itching of the nose often indicate severe Gan syndrome (nutritional deficiency disease) with ascariasis, or diarrhea with white nasal discharge, or lethargy due to brain cold, or clear rhinorrhea caused by wind-pathogen invasion leading to a preference for sleep. Lung heat causes nasal congestion due to exposure to wind-cold pathogens during breathing, blocking the orifices and hindling breastfeeding. Contracting wind-cold pathogenic heat results in similar symptoms. Sores appearing below the nose that ulcerate are caused by Gan syndrome. A constant foul odor from the nose is due to accumulated internal heat.
The area anterior to the ear is called "Erhua" (Ear Flower). The inner layers of the ear helix are called "Langlun" (Corridor Wheel). Scorched blackness of Langlun indicates deficient-heat of the Kidney. Blackness resembling charcoal signifies the exhaustion of Kidney Qi, which is fatal within a day or two. Sores appearing at the ear gate indicate abnormal accumulation of Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). Purulent discharge from the ear indicates Kidney heat and extreme Gan syndrome, with an extremely foul odor. Unceasing purulent discharge and intense itching of the sores indicate deficient-heat. Sudden hearing impairment indicates stagnation of Heart and Kidney Qi, often accompanied by rising heat or a sensation of insects scraping, caused by heat affecting Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi. Coldness of the ear lobes like ice, or the presence of bean-sized nodules invading them, if accompanied by redness and heat of the ear lobes, indicates Taiyang Shanghan (Cold Damage). This represents extreme heat causing internal pain and swelling due to conflicting Qi mechanisms. One should clear the Heart and cool the Diaphragm to unblock the orifices. Children's Kidneys are often deficient; attacking them with medication when they are healthy is futile.
There are acupoints within the eyes where the Shen (Spirit) is stored. Externally, one can investigate the Five Wheels (a TCM ophthalmological theory dividing the eye into five parts corresponding to organs). Dizziness belongs to Spleen heat, which produces eye discharge. Pain like needle pricking belongs to Heart heat. Redness of the eyes belongs to Lung heat. Formation of sand (pterygium or concretions) belongs to Liver heat. Blurred vision, nebulae, and opacity of the pupil belong to Kidney heat. Children cry immediately when their eyes hurt; good prescriptions can treat this, while avoiding toxic substances. If erysipelas sores cause internal harm, using effective medicines for rapid treatment poses no obstacle. The eyes belong to the Liver, fearing heat and shunning cold; thus, rescue and regulation are not difficult. Frequent blinking indicates mixed Jing Feng (Wind of Convulsion); sudden strabismus indicates the arrival of Jing Feng. Fixed gaze, upward deviation of the eyeballs, lack of spirit, and sunken pupils indicate a condition where ten out of ten cases are fatal.
The lips form the mouth gate, revered for speech; the tongue resides in the center, paramount for eating. Teeth are for chewing, and the pharynx constrains together. Since tooth substance is hard, and various physiological functions (metaphorically referred to via musical tones) are undetermined in infants, diseases appearing on the lips and mouth involve the Renzhong point above and Chengjiang point below. The upper, lower, front, and back all belong to the Spleen region. The interior of the mouth belongs to the Heart. Heat in the Heart and Spleen leads to tongue ulcers and lip fissures. Accumulated heat in the San Jiao (Triple Burner) causes lips to be red like blood; severe redness brings thirst, while mild redness brings drooling. Conditions like thrush (E Kou Chuang) and wooden tongue can be prevented through early intervention.
