The Lung is subdued by the Heart, opposed by the Liver, delights in pungency (La), and is injured by the changes of scorched bitterness. It is the organ of seven steaming processes. When harmonious, it brings joy, eliminates fear, refreshes the Qi, clarifies the spirit, and strengthens the Po. Disease primarily manifests as asthma, chest fullness, coughing, caused by wind injury with fever, or deficiency phlegm congestion.
The Kidney is subdued by the Spleen, opposed by the Heart, delights in salty flavor, and is injured by the changes of sweetness. It is the organ of ten steaming processes. When harmonious, it enables walking, sitting, playing, and laughing. Disease primarily manifests as teeth crumbling and blackening, grinding teeth, and purulent discharge from the ears.
The Liver is subdued by the Lung, opposed by the Spleen, delights in sour flavor, and is injured by the changes of pungency and spiciness. It is the organ of six steaming processes. When harmonious, the Hun spirit becomes robust, and will and wisdom arise. Disease primarily manifests as wind syndromes with spasms and convulsions, and swollen, red, painful eyes.
The Heart is subdued by the Kidney, opposed by the Lung, delights in bitter flavor, and is injured by the changes of brine/saltiness. It is the organ of eight steaming processes. When harmonious, the temperament is joyful and happy. Disease primarily manifests as fright epilepsy, fear, palpitations, deficiency irritability, crying, shouting, delirium, mania, restlessness, and saliva flowing from the corners of the mouth.
The Spleen is subdued by the Liver, opposed by the Kidney, delights in sweet flavor, and is injured by the changes of strong acidity. It is the organ of nine steaming processes. When harmonious, it digests grains and makes food delicious. Disease primarily manifests as vomiting and hiccups, infantile malnutrition (Gan accumulation), deficiency dysentery, abdominal masses, tidal fever, and loss of appetite for milk and food.
When the five facial colors collectively appear like flowing waves settling sediment, revealing blue-green hues, it indicates unsettled fright accumulation, impending wind syndrome. The spiritual radiance appears unstable, shifting up and down, with symptoms changing due to wind. (The first character of this verse is missing.) When the five facial colors collectively appear like flickering flames shining on a cinnabar furnace, reflecting fiery red hues, it indicates congested phlegm accumulation and aggravated fright palpitations. The spiritual radiance is uncertain in vision, appearing trance-like, indicating rapid transformation into fright. When the five facial colors collectively appear like muddy slurry smeared on an earthen wall, revealing yellow hues, it indicates food stagnation injury, impending Gan syndrome, or possibly abdominal masses. The spirit appears scattered and drowsy. Symptoms include alternating chills and fever, poor appetite, coarse and short breathing, distension, fatigue, preference for sleep, vomiting, hiccups, diarrhea, and dysentery. When the five facial colors collectively appear like floating dew entering valleys, revealing white hues, it indicates impaired Lung Qi, slippery discharge of the Large Intestine, indistinguishable water and grain, impending vomiting and diarrhea. The eyes are turbid, losing spiritual essence, appearing dim and vague. Temperament is absent, complexion lacks luster, the Five Zang organs lack substance, and the hundred vessels are deficient. This may resemble a condition requiring tonification after vomiting and diarrhea. When the five facial colors collectively appear like spreading dark dust covering everything, revealing black hues, it indicates unfavorable transmission, adverse symptom transformation, deficiency in both exterior and interior, approaching exhaustion of the Zang-Fu organs. Blood fails to nourish, Qi fails to defend. Ying and Wei lose order, meridians and collaterals stagnate in the pulses. This is a critical and ominous disease. The spirit is confused, heavy, and silent, indicating imminent death.
