It is said: When Lung Qi is obstructed and the Couli (skin texture and pores) are not unobstructed, external Cold pathogenic factors or Wind-Cold invasion cause the orifices to be blocked. The pathogen stagnates internally. Only when sneezing occurs is there slight relief, but it cannot fully disperse the pathogen.
The pathogen gradually enters the chest cavity, generating Phlegm-Heat. Once Phlegm-Heat is established, coughing ensues. In mild cases, there is shortness of breath and rapid breathing; in severe cases, it leads to Convulsions (Jing Feng). Regarding the treatment of convulsions, even if considered difficult in newborns, it is appropriate to administer Xiao Feng San (Wind-Expelling Powder). For coughing, Jin Fei Cao San (Boiling Herb Powder) or Ren Shen Qiang Huo San (Ginseng and Notopterygium Powder) are appropriate. Both formulas are harmonious and gentle; even for frail infants, they can be taken without adverse effects. Their nature is warm and pure, effectively resolving Phlegm and benefiting the Diaphragm, yielding excellent results.
It is said: The fetus forms its shape, and the umbilicus is the root of life. If the fetal Qi is solid, the body is strong; if the navel is deep, the root of life is long. If the reception of Qi is abrupt and the form withers, the umbilicus protrudes. Generally, after cutting the umbilical cord, as benefits increase, the navel becomes deeper. With harmonious breastfeeding, it becomes more solid. This is due to the smooth flow of blood vessels nourishing the physical form. Newborns with Heat in the chest cavity frequently extend their limbs, make "eh eh" sounds, strain their Qi, forcing it into the root center, causing the umbilicus to protrude, swell, become red, and appear dangerously hollow. Ignorant practitioners attribute this to improper umbilical cord cutting, which is incorrect. The umbilical cord stump, less than a chi in length, naturally rots and falls off within a month. Those with substantial constitution have deeper navels, while those with weak constitutions have shallower ones; this depth depends on innate endowment. This condition often arises because the mother experienced frequent palpitations during pregnancy or consumed hot-toxic foods. It is appropriate to administer Da Lian Qiao Yin Zi (Large Forsythia Decoction), from which the Heat will dissipate naturally, and the umbilicus will return to its normal state. There is no need to apply topical medicines, as toxicity might invade and cause harm. Physicians must understand this.
It is said: Wang Shi quotes Master Shui Jing: "The sky is vast, the earth is small," referencing the section on Night Crying in *Ye Ti Shu*. It also states: "Crying without wailing indicates irritability; wailing without crying indicates restlessness." The *Wu Gu Fu* says: "Frequent night crying resembles possession by spirits." All newborns who cry day and night with true irritability seem possessed. Some argue that Heat in the Heart Meridian requires purgative and draining methods; others argue that Cold stagnating in the Zang-Fu organs requires warming agents. The physician should examine and treat accordingly. If the infant cries with the chest protruding upward, the head bent backward, and a preference for light, it indicates Heat in the Heart Meridian. Purging and draining methods are suitable, such as taking San Huang Wan (Three Yellow Pill) or Xi Xin San (Heart-Washing Powder) added with Deng Xin Cao (Juncus Effusus) and Mai Men Dong Zi (Ophiopogon Seed). If the infant cries with the head lowered, body curled, eyes closed, and abdomen tight, it indicates Cold retained in the Zang-Fu organs. Warming methods are suitable, such as Wei Feng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction) added with Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), which is effective. If the light preference is not recognized, using fourteen intact Cicada Sloughs (Chan Tui), removing the large legs, grinding them into powder, adding one zi of Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), and mixing with honey for administration yields immediate effect.
