In the southeastern regions, dampness is prevalent year-round. Residents contracting dampness may suffer from various ailments: some due to exposure to mountain mists and evaporation from dew and rain; others from excessive consumption of cold drinks or contraction during rainy seasons. Symptoms include short, dark urine, heavy body, soreness and numbness in bones and muscles, slow movement, gradually progressing to edema and jaundice. These can be identified and treated with Jiajian Shenshi Tang (Modified Damp-Dispersing Decoction). The formula contains Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome). Decoct with Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus), Dazao (Jujube), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Before taking, add a pinch of salt. For external dampness with chills, fever, swelling, and pain, adding Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Mutong (Akebia Stem) is beneficial. For internal dampness causing vomiting after eating, abdominal fullness, and wheezing/distension, these are characteristic signs. If accompanied by food stagnation, add Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Zhangcha (Hawthorn Fruit), and Chao Bobzi (Fried Radish Seed). For difficult urination, add Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome). For damp-heat jaundice, add Yinchen (Artemisia Capillaris Herba), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Zhuling (Polyporus), along with Huashi (Talcum), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit), and Mutong (Akebia Stem). Adjust according to symptoms for best results.
Shenzhe Tang (Kidney Fixation Decoction): Treats kidney deficiency with dampness injury causing heaviness and cold sensation in the waist as if sitting in water. It is Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) minus Renshen (Ginseng Root), plus Ganjiang (Dried Ginger).
Shenshi Tang (Damp-Dispersing Decoction): Treats kidney deficiency with dampness injury, red urine, and loose stools. Uses Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Fuling (Poria), Mutong (Akebia Stem), and Gancao (Licorice Root) [the Shenzhe Tang base], plus Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Grandis), and Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos).
Single Prescription: Treats general body pain due to dampness invasion. Use 2 liang of Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) [devoid of rhizome], decocted in 1.5 bowls of wine until reduced to 1 bowl. Take warm.
Additional Remarks: External dampness arises from exposure to rain and sitting on wet ground; internal dampness arises from fermented wines and raw/cold foods. External dampness should be treated with diaphoresis (sweating); internal dampness with diuresis. Both primarily rely on promoting wind dispersion, dispersing dampness, and strengthening the spleen. Since dampness generates phlegm, Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with wind-dispelling herbs is used.
One Prescription: Treats atrophy of the penis due to dampness. Burn one bar of soap until carbonized, mix with sesame oil, and apply topically for cure.
One Prescription: Treats lower genital itching due to dampness in women. Wash with a decoction of Chuangzi (Cnidium Fruit).
Treating dampness invasion with lockjaw and unconsciousness: Slice 1 liang of Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) for one dose. Decoct in 3 bowls of wine until reduced to 1 bowl. Take all at once. For those who do not drink alcohol...
Although Jaundice is divided into five types, it essentially stems from one source: spleen deficiency and stomach weakness, where damp-heat from food and fluids stagnates and steams. Symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, and dark, difficult urination. To remove damp-heat and resolve jaundice, clearing and promoting urination is the primary method. Use Yinchen (Artemisia Capillaris Herba), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Zhuling (Polyporus), Fuling (Poria), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit), and Huashi (Talcum). Combine Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit), Zhike (Bitter Orange), and Chenpi (Tangerine Peel). Add Gancao (Licorice Root), Mutong (Akebia Stem), and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome).
If there is abdominal fullness and difficulty defecating, the medicine must utilize the power of Jiangjun (Da Huang/Rhubarb Root). If thirst and intense heat prevail, it is difficult to treat; if yellowing extends to the palms and soles, treatment is futile.
Yinchen Wuling San (Artemisia Capillaris Five-Ingredient Powder): Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Zhuling (Polyporus), Fuling (Poria), and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) each 2 qian, mixed with 4 qian of Yinchen (Artemisia Capillaris Herba) powder. Take three times daily.
Da Yinchen Tang (Major Artemisia Capillaris Decoction): Treats epidemic stagnant-heat inside, steaming and not dispersing, causing whole-body jaundice. Yinchen (Artemisia Capillaris Herba) 2 liang, Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) 1 liang, Zhizi Ren (Gardenia Seed) 3 qian.
Bixiao San (Must-Effective Powder): General treatment for the five jaundices. Tingli (Descurainiae Semen), Longdancao (Gentiana Root), Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit), Yinchen (Artemisia Capillaris Herba), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) in equal parts. Take 1 liang per dose.
Xiao Wenzhong Tang (Minor Warming Middle Decoction): Treats mild jaundice and removes food stagnation. Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizome), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), Zhensha (Magnetite) [stir-fried with vinegar until red]. In spring, add Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome); in summer, add Kushen (Sophora Flavescens Root) or Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome); in winter, add Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) or Ganjiang (Dried Ginger).
Da Wenzhong Tang (Major Warming Middle Decoction): Treats jaundice and food stagnation, and controls liver dryness. For spleen deficiency, take with Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), and Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) decoction. Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome), Pengze (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel) each 5 liang; Gancao (Licorice Root), Zhensha (Magnetite) [stir-fried with vinegar until red] each 2 liang; Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizome) 1 jin. Make pills with vinegar paste. Take on an empty stomach with ginger-salt water. After meals, take with wine. Avoid dog meat and fruits/vegetables.
Single Prescription: Crush Digupi (Groundcherry Root Bark), extract juice, mix with white wine, and drink for cure. Alternatively, use pig bile mixed with white wine.
Another Prescription: Raw BaiFan (Alumen), dried in midsummer, made into pills with Jujube. Take 2-3 qian per dose. Eat more meat afterwards to suppress the medication's effect.
Another Prescription: Lüfan (Chalcanthite) [stir-fried until white, or baked in a bottle until white is better], cooked with jujube to make pills the size of cherries. Take 5 pills per dose, three times daily, with cold yellow wine. Avoid raw/cold foods and stimulating foods. If parasites are present, they will also be vomited out. Highly effective.
Additional Remarks: There are five types of jaundice: Huanghan (Yellow Sweat), Huangdan (Jaundice), Jiudan (Wine Jaundice), Gu dan (Grain Jaundice), and Nülaodan (Female Exhaustion Jaundice). Their essence is damp-heat stagnating and steaming in the spleen. The treatment principle focuses on promoting urination. However, some cases occur after typhoid fever where resolution was incomplete, presenting with bland taste, tinnitus, palpitations, weak legs, slight chills/fever, and white turbid discharge. This is a deficiency syndrome and should not be treated solely with cooling medicines. The Pulse Classic states: Five jaundices involve excess-heat, so the pulse must be surging and rapid; if the pulse is faint and choppy, the syndrome belongs to deficiency. Danxi stated: For mild cases, use Xiao Wenzhong Wan (Minor Warming Middle Pills); for severe cases, use Da Wenzhong Wan (Major Warming Middle Pills). If heat is severe, add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome).
