The term "Qi Syndrome" refers to conditions induced by unceasing anger. When the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, Fright) are triggered, how should they be treated? The ancients formulated Qiqi Tang (Seven Qi Decoction), with Houpo (Magnolia Bark) and Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel) as the primary ingredients.
The ancient formula Siqi Tang (Four Seven Decoction) is used to treat phlegm-drool formed by the condensation of Qi from the seven emotions: Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, and Fright. The symptoms manifest as phlegm resembling torn cotton or a plum-pit sensation in the throat (Plum-Pit Qi), which cannot be expectorated nor swallowed; or epigastric fullness and obstruction; or excessive phlegm accumulation causing upper body wheezing and congestion; or fluid retention obstructing the middle jiao, leading to vomiting, regurgitation, and nausea.
Prescription: Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome) 5 liang, Fuling (Poria) 4 liang, Houpo (Magnolia Bark) 3 liang, Zisu (Perilla Leaf) 2 liang.
Decoction method: Decoct with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube). For Plum-Pit Qi, add Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) (another version adds Binglang (Areca Seed)); for white turbid urine caused by excessive thought, this formula may be used in conjunction with Qingzhou Bai Wanzi (Qingzhou White Pills).
Fenxin Qi Yin (Divided Heart Qi Drink) treats disorders caused by stagnant Qi due to depression. Symptoms include chest and diaphragm fullness and oppression, distension in the hypochondrium, belching with acid reflux, nausea, dizziness, bitter taste in the mouth, dry tongue, reduced appetite, and constipation due to intestinal deficiency.
Prescription: Zisu (Perilla Leaf) 2 liang, Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Dafupi (Areca Pericarpium), Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) each 5 qian; Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), Mutong (Akebia Caulis) each 3.5 qian; Chishao (Red Peony Root) 3 qian; Guanzi Gui (Cinnamon Twig), Gancao (Licorice Root) each 2.5 qian.
Decoction method: Divide into five doses, decoct with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Dazao (Jujube), and Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus). If irritable, add Chaihu (Bupleurum Root); if prone to anger, add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root); if poor appetite, add Sharen (Amomum Fruit) and Shenqu (Medicated Leaven); if coughing, add Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) and Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome); if severe obstruction, add Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome); if Sanjiao (Triple Burner) disharmony, add Wuyao (Lindera Root); if Qi closure, add Laifuzi (Radish Seed) and Zhike (Bitter Orange); if excess heat in the Upper Jiao, add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root); if excess heat in the Lower Jiao, add Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit); for Fanwei (Regurgitation/Vomiting), add Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood) (taken as ground powder); for facial edema due to water-Qi, add Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Cheqian (Plantago Seed), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Tinglizi (Descurainia Seed), and Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber); if Qi forms masses, add Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome) and Ezhu (Curcuma Rhizome).
Supplementary Discussion
Xuanyuan (Yellow Emperor) and Qibo discussed that various pains are primarily due to Qi, thus giving rise to the theory of "Nine Qi." Their statement says: "Joy causes Qi to slacken, Anger causes Qi to ascend, Sorrow causes Qi to dissipate, Thought causes Qi to knot..." (Note: The original text contains lacunae and textual errors here; the meaning is inferred based on TCM theory).
