Zhi Jing Tang (Stop Menstruation Decoction): Treats women with fatigue and lassitude, excessive sleepiness, poor appetite, continuous dripping of menstrual blood, or discharge in clots, or discharge of red, white, or yellow watery secretions. The complexion is greenish-yellow, accompanied by dizziness, blurred vision, and soreness and pain in the four limbs. This syndrome requires urgent regulation to prevent progression into Beng Lou (flooding and spotting). Based on these symptoms all belonging to deficiency of Spleen-Stomach Yuan Qi (Original Qi), formulas such as Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing Young Harmony Decoction), Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction), Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), and Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Tonification Decoction) should be used. This formula is also steady and appropriate; adding Ginseng would yield even better results.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (each 1 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen, stir-fried), Baiye (Platycladi Cacumen, stir-fried with salt water) (each 7 fen), Xiangfu (Cyperri Rhizoma) (1 qian), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 5 fen).
Take as one dose, add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), decoct in water, and take on an empty stomach.
Puhuang San (Polygonum Catapaylum Powder): Treats persistent menstrual bleeding.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (5 fen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baiye (Platycladi Cacumen), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen) (each 4 fen), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (2 fen), Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) (1 fen), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (24 fen), Fulonggan (Terra Flavum Ustam) (12 fen).
Cut the herbs into small pieces. Use two sheng of water, decoct to obtain eight ge of liquid, and divide into two doses. (This formula uses Shengdihuang as the main herb, while Aiye is used in only a small amount, and there are no Qi-tonifying herbs; readers must understand this intention.)
Gu Jing Wan (Solidify the Menses Pill): Treats excessive and unceasing menstruation, caused by Yin deficiency with accompanying heat. The treatment method should be to tonify Yin and clear Heat.
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 3 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (2 liang), Guiban (Testudinis et Carapacis et Plastrum, roasted) (4 liang), Chugenpi (Stemonae Radix Bark), Xiangfuzi (Cyperi Rhizoma, processed with Tongbian/child's urine) (each 1.5 liang).
Grind into fine powder, mix with wine paste to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 50-70 pills per dose, washed down with plain warm water. (This is the method of Mr. Zhu Danxi. It focuses on the Yin of the Liver and Kidney, using only one ingredient from Siwu Tang; how could this be known by ordinary understanding?)
Qinxin Wan (Scutellaria Heart Pill): Treats women after age forty-nine, when Tian Gui (menstrual essence) should cease, yet menstruation continues monthly, either excessively or without stopping.
Huangqin Xin (Scutellariae Radix Heart and branches) (2 liang, soaked in Mixie/Mi Jiang/Rice Wash Water for seven days, roasted dry, then soaked and roasted again, repeating this process seven times) (Using Mi Jiang introduces Stomach Qi into the Yangming Meridian).
Grind into powder, mix with vinegar paste to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 70 pills per dose, washed down with warm wine on an empty stomach, taken twice daily.
Buzhong Xiong Tang (Tonify Middle and Ligusticum Decoction): Treats wind-deficiency cold and heat sensations, damage to the Chong and Ren vessels due to overwork, irregular menstruation, sudden flooding (Beng Zhong Bao Xia), excessive blood loss postpartum, weakness and emaciation with abdominal pain, or fetal restlessness with bleeding during pregnancy.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed) (each 3 liang), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, honey-roasted), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, stir-fried), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted) (each 1 liang).
Take 3 qian per dose, use one and a half zhong of water, decoct to one zhong, and take on an empty stomach.
Rong Fu Tang (Velvet Antler and Aconite Decoction): Tonifies the Chong and Ren vessels, regulates Blood and Qi.
Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (4 liang), Lurong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum, wine-roasted) (3 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Muli (Ostreae Concha, calcined) (each 2 liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae, raw use), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 liang).
Take half a liang per dose, use two zhong of water, decoct to eight parts, and take warm. (Astringent and hemostatic herbs are not difficult in their astringency, but difficult in their warmth; their excellence lies particularly in tonifying Qi within the Blood and lifting sunken Qi.)
The above two formulas are suitable for Cold syndromes. There are cases where the Sea of Blood is deficient and cold, leading to an inability to restrain menstruation.
