Yuetong San (Pain-Relieving Powder): Treats generalized body pain caused by deficiency-cold of blood and qi. (This body pain is treated with this specific method; note that body pain and abdominal pain are distinct.)
Tiger Bone (Wugu Gu, 5 qian), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Gaoben (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (each 3 qian).
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add two zhong of water, five slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and three dates. Decoct until one zhan remains. Take at any time. This is a formula for treating body pain.
Bawu Tang (Eight-Ingredient Decoction): Treats colicky pain in the umbilical and abdominal region occurring just before menstruation, due to qi stagnation and blood stasis.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Kulian (Cortex Meliae Toosendan) (crushed, stir-fried, each 1 qian), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Binglang (Semen Arecae) (each 0.5 qian).
Take as one dose, decoct in water, and take before meals. (The first four ingredients nourish blood, while the latter four regulate qi. Chuanxiong moves qi within the blood aspect, and Yanhusuo invigorates blood within the qi aspect; this must be understood.)
Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four-Substance Decoction): Treats persistent pain when menstruation is about to begin. (This formula contains herbs that break blood, break qi, invigorate blood, and move qi. It can be taken for pain preceding menstruation.)
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (wine-washed), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) (each 1.5 qian), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra) (stir-fried), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae) (vinegar-boiled), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi) (vinegar-boiled, each 1 qian), Sharen (Fructus Amomi) (0.8 fen), Taoren (Semen Persicae) (deprived of skin and tips, 0.7 fen), Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii) (wine-stir-fried, 0.5 fen).
Cut into pieces. Decoct in water and take.
Wuyao Tang (Lindera Decoction): Treats pain in the Sea of Blood. (This formula primarily treats qi disorders.)
Wuyao (Herba Linderae Aggregate), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi) (2 qian), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (1 qian), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (roasted, each 0.5 qian).
Cut into pieces. Decoct in water and take.
Jiawei Wuyao Tang (Modified Lindera Decoction): Treats colicky pain in the umbilical and abdominal region when menstruation is about to arrive.
Wuyao (Herba Linderae Aggregate), Suosha (Fructus Amomi Cardamomi), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis) (each 1 liang), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi) (stir-fried, de-haired, 2 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (roasted, 1.5 liang).
Cut finely. Take 7 qian per dose with three slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Decoct in water and take warm. (This formula consists entirely of qi-regulating herbs and is suitable only for excess blood patterns. Its brilliance lies in not using blood-invigorating herbs.)
Danliao Zhufu Wan (Danliao Boiled Aconite Pill): Treats irregular menstruation, stabbing pain from blood and qi disorders, abdominal and hypochondriac distension, dizziness, and nausea. All are suitable for this treatment.
Xiangfuzi (Fructus Cyperi Rotundi) (wipe off hair, amount unspecified, soak in rice vinegar for one day, boil in a clay pot until vinegar is exhausted) (The妙 [wonder] lies in using vinegar to enter the Liver channel and move qi).
Grind into powder. Make pills with vinegar paste, size of tung tree seeds. Dry in the sun. Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with light vinegar soup.
The above formulas are all agents for moving stagnant qi.
Jianghuang San (Curcuma Powder): Treats long-standing cold in the Blood Organ, irregular menstruation, and stabbing pain in the umbilical and abdominal region due to coagulated blood stasis.
Jianghuang (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae), Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (stir-fried, 3 liang), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis) (each 2 liang), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae) (baked, sliced), Guanzi Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii) (each 1 liang). (This differs slightly from Jiawei Siwu Tang; its妙 [wonder] lies in removing Dihuang and adding Guanzi Gui and Jianghuang.)
Cut into pieces. Take 1 liang per dose, add two zhan of water and a little wine. Decoct together and take before meals.
Hupo San (Amber Powder): Treats menstrual obstruction in women, where attacks cause unbearable colicky pain in the heart, abdomen, and umbilicus. Also treats slow expulsion of lochia postpartum, blood rushing to the heart causing coma and unconsciousness, and apparent death-like states. (Other Hupo San formulas contain Amber, but this one does not; it borrows the name to praise its efficacy.)
Jingsanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii Stoloniferi), Peng'ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae Phaeocaulis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Liuji Nu (Herba Siegesbeckiae Orientalis), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Zhen Puhuang (Pollen Typhae) (stir-fried), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Guanzi Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici) (each 1 liang).
Take the first five ingredients, boil with one sheng of black soybeans, half a jin of sliced Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and four sheng of rice vinegar until the beans are soft. Bake dry, then mix with the remaining five ingredients. Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine. Take on an empty stomach or before meals.
*Ben Shi Fang* states: One variant omits Juhua and Puhuang, using Wuyao and Yanhusuo instead, which is also good. This is my family's secret formula. For ordinary blood and qi pain, one dose suffices. For postpartum blood rushing to the heart, two doses bring relief. Regular use is especially beneficial. I have saved many people in urgent situations and should prepare more to help others.
Yanhusuo San (Corydalis Powder): Treats stabbing pain from blood and qi attacking, as well as new and old, excess and deficiency abdominal pain.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (soaked in wine), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) (stir-fried), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Puhuang (Pollen Typhae) (stir-fried through paper), Guipi (Cortex Cinnamomi), Ruxiang (Resina Olibani) (ground with water), Moyao (Resina Myrrhae) (each 1 qian, using Ruxiang and Moyao to unblock blood and qi stasis is a further advanced method).
Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Danggui San (Angelica Powder): Treats long-standing colicky pain from accumulated blood and qi in women, stabbing pain in urination, and weakness in the four limbs.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) (wine-stir-fried), Liuji Nu (Herba Siegesbeckiae Orientalis), Zhiqiao (Fructus Aurantii) (bran-stir-fried), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Moyao (Resina Myrrhae) (equal parts).
Grind into powder. Mix with hot wine and take 2 qian. Take at any time.
Experience Formula: Treats umbilical and abdominal pain in women leading to loss of consciousness. One dose stops it immediately. Those who do not know mistake it for Heart Qi pain, which is incorrect.
Mutong (Caulis Akebiae Trifoliatae) (peeled), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra) (stir-fried), Wulingzhi (Faeces Trogopterori) (stir-fried, equal parts).
Chop. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in half a zhan of vinegar and half a zhan of water until seven-tenths remain. Take warm.
Sanshen Wan (Three-God Pill): Treats young unmarried women where blood and qi contend, causing stabbing pain in the abdomen radiating to the heart, scanty or difficult menstruation, or irregular menstruation leading to pain.
Juhong (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (2 liang), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis) (peeled, vinegar-boiled), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (wine-soaked, lightly stir-fried, each 1 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Boil in wine, make pills with rice paste, size of tung tree seeds. Take 70 pills per dose, increasing to 100. Take on an empty stomach with Mugwort soup; rice drink is also acceptable.
Jiaojia San (Interlaced Powder): Treats women with uncommunicating Ying and Wei, irregular meridians, cramping abdominal pain, excessive qi and deficient blood, formation of masses (Jia), and wind-stroke postpartum.
Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (each 5 liang, separately crushed to extract juice).
Interlace the juices, soak the dregs overnight until the juice is exhausted. Stir-fry each until yellow and grind into powder. For ordinary abdominal pain, take 3 qian mixed with wine. Especially indispensable postpartum.
Jiaojia San (Interlaced Powder): Treats disharmony of Ying and Wei, turbid menstruation, expelling bad blood, cramping pain in the umbilical and abdominal region, and heavy sensation in waist and legs. (This formula is comparable to Hupo San, but contains Baishaoyao, making it suitable for regular use.)
Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (2 jin, crushed to extract juice, keep dregs), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) (2 jin, crushed to extract juice, keep dregs), Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis) (wrapped in vinegar-soaked paper, baked熟, wipe skin off with cloth), Puhuang (Pollen Typhae) (stir-fried through paper, each 1 liang), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) (1 liang), Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii) (stir-fried, omit if no bad blood exists), Moyao (Resina Myrrhae) (separately ground, each 0.5 liang).
First, stir-fry Shengjiang dregs with Shengdihuang juice, and Shengdihuang dregs with Shengjiang juice. Bake dry separately. Mix with other herbs into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose with warm wine. If menstruation is irregular, take with Sumu (Lignum Sappan) decocted in wine. If there is lower back pain, take with Tangqiuzi (fruit of Diospyros lotus) decocted in wine.
Jiaojia Dihuang Wan (Interlaced Rehmannia Pill): Treats irregular menstruation, blood clumps and qi blockage, and abdominal pain in women.
Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens), Laoshengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (each 1 jin, separately crushed to extract juice and keep dregs), Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra) (each 2 liang), Ming Ruxiang (Resina Olibani), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) (each 1 liang), Taoren (Semen Persicae) (deprived of skin and tips), Renshen (Radix Ginseng) (each 0.5 liang), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi) (0.5 jin). (One formula has three variations; this becomes a pill. Here, Moyao and Rougui form one group, while Sanxiang, Renshen, and Taoren form another, which is not contradictory.
