Eggplant, its root is named Dongfeng Grass (Caulis Solani Melongena). It tastes sweet and is cold in nature. It belongs to Yin. It primarily induces the accumulation of wind pathogens and stirs up cold phlegm. Consumption leads to vomiting, itching of the facial skin, and disturbance of Liver Qi. For those with Liver accumulations, consumption causes distension in the left hypochondrium and damages the Liver; thus, it should not be eaten in excess.
Eggplant tastes sweet and is cold in nature. It treats alternating chills and fever, five viscera exhaustion syndromes, and shi lao (corpse labor/chronic wasting disease) caused by pestilence. Grinding eggplant with vinegar and applying it externally to sores and toxins disperses blood, stops breast pain, reduces swelling, and relaxes the intestines. Burning it to ash and drinking it with rice water treats persistent hematochezia due to intestinal wind and bloody hemorrhoids. Excessive consumption damages the eyes, causes abdominal pain and dysentery; excessive consumption by women damages the uterus; furthermore, it is miraculous for treating hernia (testicular descent). Additionally, inserting Jingmo (Beijing Ink) and Wenhai (Clam Shell) into the eggplant, and after thirty days taking out the black ink to apply to the beard, turns the beard black. The roots and leaves treat frostbite; when steamed hot and applied externally, they treat paralysis.

Eggplant tastes sweet and bland, and is cold in nature. It is non-toxic. Its action is primarily descending, capable of relaxing the middle jiao and dispersing blood. However, excessive consumption induces wind qi and triggers chronic diseases, sores, and scabies. Those with weak Spleen should avoid eating it, and consumption after autumn damages the eyes.
Dongfeng Grass tastes sweet and is cold in nature. It primarily promotes the flow of Liver Qi, washes away wind causing skin itching, washes away wandering wind affecting the face, and dispels damp-itch in the female genitalia and turbid sores in the yin region.
Pudi Shen (Ground Cover Ginseng), also known as Dapo Wan (Break-the-Bowl) or Panchang Shen (Coiled Intestine Ginseng). It tastes bitter, is neutral in nature, and slightly cold. It primarily treats leukorrhea in women, upper excess and lower deficiency, disharmony between Water and Fire, and infertility after prolonged duration.

Tugua (Earth Melon), tastes sweet and is neutral in nature. One plant has multiple branches, leaves resemble those of the gourd, and melons form at the base of the root. There are two varieties: red and white. The red variety treats leukorrhea (red and white discharge) in women, unblocks menstruation, and clears heat; the white variety treats imbalance of Yin and Yang, chronic coldness of the female uterus, and cold sperm in men. It also strengthens the Spleen and Stomach and generates body fluids. Raw consumption stops vomiting and alleviates hunger. Those produced in Lin'an are superior. Stored for two to three years, with individual melons weighing two to three jin (approx. 1-1.5 kg), are even better.
