[Five-Gall Nut] Bitter, sour, and astringent. Grows on Rhus chinensis (Salt-leaf sumac), varying in round or long shapes, hanging among leaves. The shell is hard, brittle, hollow, containing small insects resembling midges. It should be steamed to remove the insects before use.
[White Five-Gall Nut] Astringent, sweet.
Method for preparing Baiyaojian: Crush five-gall nut into coarse powder. For every jin (500g) of five-gall nut, use 1 liang (37.5g) of true tea, decoct into a concentrated liquid. Add 4 liang of fermented dregs, grind until smooth, mix well, place in a vessel, and set in a bran vat to ferment. Add half a jin of yeast and a small amount of fine tea, form into cakes, and sun-dry for use. Another method: Seal collected five-gall nuts in June, open after seven days, and sun-dry for use.
[Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case)] Salty, neutral. When used, do not select those growing on miscellaneous trees; choose those from mulberry trees, steam them, and roast over fire before use, otherwise it may cause diarrhea. It is incompatible with Inulae Flos (Xuanfuhua).
[Centipede] Salty, acrid, warm, slightly toxic. Time of collection does not matter, but white, straight centipedes that feed on mulberry leaves are preferred. Soak in rice washing water for one day, wait for saliva to float up, then drain. Bake dry, removing silk and black mouthparts. Adverse reaction with Sangpiaoxiao, Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Poria (Fuling), and Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma (Bixie).
[Turtle Beetle (Eupolyphaga)] Salty, warm, slightly toxic. It is the exuviae of the second generation of silkworms. Male specimens are used for medicine. Roast and remove head, legs, and wings before use.
[Scorpion] Also known as Quanxie. Sweet, acrid, neutral, toxic. Remove legs and soil, roast before use. Whole scorpions are called Quanxie (Whole Scorpion); using only the tail is called Xieshao (Scorpion Tail), which has weaker efficacy. It becomes soft and easy to handle when slightly warmed; wrap in cloth soaked in water while on the body. *Gujin Luyian* records: For scorpion stings, simply cover the affected area with a wooden bowl, which is miraculous.
[Toad Venom (Chan Su)] Salty, sweet, cold. When used, wash with boiling water to remove soil, wings, and feet. Decoct in grain mash water, then sun-dry for use.
[Pangolin Scales] Acrid, cool, slightly toxic. Remove skin, intestines, and claws. Soak in wine overnight, roast with butter, and use when dry. Do not use individuals with red eyes or lacking the "Dan Shu" (eight characters pattern) on the abdomen.
[Toad Venom (Continued)] This is the white secretion from the glans between the eyebrows of the toad. Insert garlic and pepper or other spicy substances into its mouth to induce the flow of white juice. Scrape down with a bamboo comb and dry for use. Authentic Chan Su is light and floats, tastes sweet in the mouth. Do not let it enter the eyes, as it causes redness and blindness; wash with purple perilla juice to resolve.
[Tortoise Plastron] Acrid, warm, toxic. Roast over fire to remove head, legs, tail, and shell. Alternatively, remove tail and legs, bake with mint leaves over fire, or roast with wine... Spider...
