Danxi stated: Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) is described in Bencao (Materia Medica) as extremely cold, implying it belongs to the same category as Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Lianhua (Loti Flos). However, various formulas use it for postpartum conditions, prenatal disorders, traumatic injuries, locked jaw, blood deficiency with spontaneous sweating, Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst), and polyuria. These are all Yin-deficiency diseases, and Zhuli is invariably used. Why do secular practitioners discard it simply because of the term "extremely cold"? The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) states: "Yin deficiency generates internal heat." Zhuli is cold yet can tonify; its nature directly counteracts the pathology. Zhuli has a sweet taste and mild action, capable of clearing severe heat arising from Yin deficiency. The description "extremely cold" refers to its therapeutic efficacy, not its thermal nature/qi. Moreover, since it is derived through fire processing, how can it truly be cold? Note: In formulas containing Zhuli, the addition of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Fuzi (Aconiti Radix Preparata) distinguishes between cold and heat patterns; the addition of Jingli (Juice of Tribuli Fructus) depends on the deficiency or excess of Phlegm-Qi; and the inclusion of Gezhi (Puerariae Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), and Tiandong (Asparagi Radix) follows meridian differentiation. These principles must be understood.
