The above two ingredients are boiled in five sheng of water until three sheng remain, divided into three doses to be taken warm.
Yangshi Xiaozhong Pill (Yang's Edema-Reducing Pill): Treats abdominal distension caused by water qi, with swelling of the head, face, limbs, and scrotum, accompanied by rapid breathing, cough, restlessness during sleep, and red, scanty, or painful urination.
Dan Chi (Fermented Soybean, Semen Sojae Praeparatum), Er Liang; Ba Dou (Croton Seed, Semen Crotonis), Yi Liang (boiled in half a sheng of water, then oil removed); Jing San Leng (Burreed Tuber, Rhizoma Sparganii), processed; Da Ji (Euphorbia Root, Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae); Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, Semen Armeniacae Amarum), roasted to retain charred properties, each half liang; Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterus Dung, Faeces Trichospori), Yi Fen.
Grind the above into fine powder, knead with raw flour paste, pound for over a thousand times, and form pills the size of mung beans. Take fifty pills per dose, administered with a decoction of Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark, Cortex Mori Radicis).
Dongyuan Zhongman Fenxiao Pill (Dongyuan's Middle-Jiao Distension-Diffusing Pill): Treats water qi heat distension.
See the "Pi Zhang" (Stagnation and Distension) section for the formula.
Wenbai Wan (Warm White Pill): Treats ten types of water diseases.
See the "Ji Ju" (Accumulation and Mass) section for the formula.
Note: The above formulas differ in weight and potency compared to those from the Taiyang pattern examples. They should be selected according to the specific syndrome.
Sanyin Danggui San (Three Causes Angelica Powder): Edema is often caused by Kidney Water failing to nourish Heart Fire, which in turn fails to nourish Spleen Earth. Consequently, Spleen Earth cannot control Water, leading to an overflow of water qi, blockage of qi and vessels, penetration into meridians and collaterals, and the manifestation of edema.
Mu Xiang (Costus Root, Radix Aucklandoniae); Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria, Polyporus Umbellatus cum Mycelium); Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root, Radix Angelicae Sinensis); Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig, Ramulus Cinnamomi); Mu Tong (Akebia Stem, Caulis Akebiae); Chi Shao (Red Peony Root, Radix Paeoniae Rubra); Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark, Cortex Moutan); Bing Lang (Areca Seed, Semen Arecae); Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae); Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae).
Equal parts, coarsely crushed. For each ban liang of the mixture, add five leaves of Zi Su (Perilla Leaf, Folium Perillae) and one slice of Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit, Fructus Chaenomelis), and decoct for administration.
Jisheng Jiawei Shenqi Wan (Jisheng Modified Rehmannia Qi Pill): Treats lumbar heaviness and leg swelling due to Kidney and Spleen deficiency, accompanied by difficult urination.
Bai Fu Ling (Poria, Polyporus Umbellatus), San Liang; Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root, Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Ban Liang; Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome, Rhizoma Alismatis); Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig, Ramulus Cinnamomi); Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathula Root, Radix Cyathulae); Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed, Semen Plantaginis); Shan Yao (Chinese Yam Rhizome, Rhizoma Dioscoreae); Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit, Fructus Corni); Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark, Cortex Moutan), each Yi Liang; Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Si Liang.
Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey, and form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take seventy pills per dose on an empty stomach, administered with rice water.
Note: These two formulas originate from Taiyang pattern examples. Danxi stated: When treating edema due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency, one should employ methods to promote dampness resolution and diuresis. This allows the Spleen Qi to become solid, naturally restoring its transportation and transformation functions, and facilitating ascending and descending movements. By activating the pivot mechanism, water moves naturally; this is not the same as the water-draining method of Wuling San (Five-Ling Decoction). One must strictly avoid purgative methods; caution is essential. Although not all treatment methods are detailed here, students who observe this example will grasp more than half of the principles.
Miscellaneous Formulas

Grind into fine powder, mix with scallion juice to form a paste. Apply to the navel, approximately one cun high and wide. Secure with silk cloth. Continue application until urination resumes normally. Change twice daily.
