When wind-pathogen invades the meridians, it causes deviation of the mouth and eye; when it invades the fu-organs, it leads to limb dysfunction; when it invades the zang-organs, it endangers life. In treating such conditions, there is no better method than those mentioned above for releasing the exterior, regulating qi and blood, and resolving phlegm. However, these methods can only support the disease process; if one seeks complete recovery, moxibustion with mugwort is the best choice.
Tinghui (GB2) [Auditory Meeting]: Two acupoints located in the depression anterior to the ear, found upon opening the mouth, where the arterial pulse is palpable.
Jiache (ST6) [Chejia]: Two acupoints located in the deep depression below the ear, approximately two leeks' widths wide, found upon opening the mouth.
Dicang (ST4) [Earth Granary]: Two acupoints located four fen lateral to the corner of the mouth horizontally, near the lower aspect, where a faint pulse moves.
If the face deviates to the right, it indicates left-sided meridian wind-stroke with flaccidity; moxibustion should be applied to the depression on the left side, 14 moxa cones (two sevens).
If the face deviates to the left, it indicates right-sided meridian wind-stroke with flaccidity; moxibustion should be applied to the depression on the right side, 14 moxa cones (two sevens).
Baihui (GV20) [Hundred Convergences]: One acupoint located in the center of the vertex, within the whorl of hair.
Jianyu (LI15) [Shoulder Well]: Two acupoints located in the deep depression between the two bones at the shoulder tip, taken with the arm raised.
Quchi (LI11) [Pool at the Crook]: Two acupoints located at the lateral end of the elbow crease, on the auxiliary bone, when flexing the elbow and bringing hands to the chest; it is in the depression at the head of the wrinkle.
Fengshi (GB31) [Wind Market]: Two acupoints located between the two tendons on the lateral aspect of the knee. When standing upright with arms relaxed hanging down, the tip of the middle finger touches the deep depression.
Zusanli (ST36) [Leg Three Miles]: Two acupoints located three cun below the knee, between the large tendon inside and the tibia outside, in the deep depression; taken with the foot raised.
Yangjiao (GB39) [Yang Junction] (Note: Text says Juegu, commonly identified as Yangjiao GB39 or Xuanzhong GB39 depending on context, here translated as Juegu/Yangjiao): Two acupoints located three cun above the lateral malleolus, in the arterial pulse.
Whenever one feels numbness or insensibility in the limbs, or pain that lasts for a long time before subsiding, this is a sign of impending fu-organ wind-stroke. It is advisable to moxa these seven acupoints. If the disease is on the left, moxa the right; if on the right, moxa the left.
For cases of zang-organ wind-stroke characterized by qi obstruction, upward rushing of saliva, aphasia, and critical unconsciousness, moxibustion yields immediate effect.
Baihui (GV20): One acupoint, position as described above.
Fengchi (GB20) [Wind Pool]: Two acupoints located in the depression posterior to the temporal region, at the hairline.
Dazhui (GV14) [Great Vertebra]: One acupoint located in the depression above the first thoracic vertebra at the back of the neck.
Jianjing (GB21) [Shoulder Well]: Two acupoints located in the depression/fissure on the shoulder, one and a half cun anterior to the supraclavicular fossa on the prominent bone. Press with three fingers; the point is where the middle finger sinks. Take with the arm raised.
Quchi (LI11): Two acupoints, position as described above.
Jianshi (PC5) [Intervening Messenger]: Two acupoints located three cun proximal to the wrist crease, in the depression between the two tendons.
Zusanli (ST36): Two acupoints, position as described above.
Whenever one feels mental confusion, lack of joy in spirit, or numbness/paralysis in the limbs, this is a sign of impending zang-organ wind-stroke. Regardless of whether it is caused by wind or qi stagnation, quickly moxa these seven acupoints, but follow the sequence.
Moxa each acupoint 5 to 7 cones. Perform moxibustion separately each day until reaching the number of cones corresponding to the patient's age (Sui Nian Zhuang). Individuals prone to wind-stroke should pay special attention to this method. This moxibustion technique ensures safety. This method can save those on the verge of death. The Classics state: "When a person suffers from wind-stroke, if they endure the pain strongly and refuse moxibustion, they may suddenly die. What disease is this? It is because wind has entered the zang-organs."
