According to the *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), "The Lung dislikes cold." It also states, "Exposure of the body to cold and consumption of cold drinks or food will damage the Lung." Here, "exposure to cold" refers to external contraction of Wind-Cold pathogenic factors, while "consumption of cold" refers to internal injury caused by ingesting raw or cold foods. All these conditions are suitable for warming the Lung treatment method.
Simple and easy-to-use formulas include Xingzi Tang (Apricot Kernel Decoction), which treats all cases of cough due to contraction of Wind-Cold, injury from cold food, consumptive disease with hemoptysis, and accumulation of phlegm-fluids. The ingredients include Dangshen (Codonopsis Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Guigui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). If accompanied by a common cold, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) may be added. Additionally, there are Shensu Wenfei Tang (Ginseng and Perilla Warming Lung Decoction), Banxia Wenfei Tang (Pinellia Warming Lung Decoction), and Xingban Jianggui Wan (Star-Banxia Ginger-Cinnamon Pill), all derived from this therapeutic principle.
This formula is used to treat various symptoms such as cough and asthma. (Diagnostic criteria: Clear sputum indicates Cold syndrome; yellow and turbid sputum indicates Heat syndrome; red face with abundant sputum indicates Heat syndrome; pale face with shortness of breath indicates Deficiency syndrome.)
1. If Wind-Cold pathogens lodge in the Lung, causing cough, asthma, and rebellious Qi ascending, Jiubao Yin (Nine Treasures Drink) is suitable (decocted from Zisu (Perillae Folium), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), etc., and applied externally).
2. If cold food injures the Lung, causing cough, asthma, and rebellious Qi, Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) are suitable.
3. If the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner) Spleen and Stomach are deficient and cold, with phlegm-fluid qi present, water sounds and discomfort in the epigastrium, and frequent vomiting of clear fluid, Jiawei Lizhong Tang (Modified Regulate the Middle Decoction) containing Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Guigui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) is suitable, combined with hot compress therapy.
4. If the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner) lacks fire, Kidney Water overflows upward transforming into phlegm, resulting in cold water and cold metal (Kidney Cold and Lung Cold), Bawei Dihuang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) is suitable.
5. If both the Lung and Stomach are deficient, with Qi rebelling upward (Stomach deficiency leads to rebellious Qi, continuous wheezing, so Wenyang Ga (Warming Stomach Plaster) should be referenced), it is suitable to reference Wenyang Ga.
6. If both the Lung and Kidney are deficient, failing to grasp Qi, it is suitable to reference Wen Shen Gu Zhen Gao (Warming Kidney and Securing True Essence Plaster).
It also treats Cold Xiao (Cold Asthma, triggered by cold) and Leng Wei (Cold Atrophy, atrophy caused by Lung deficiency-cold).
Application sites: Apply above to the Xin Kou (epigastrium/heart pit), middle to the Qi Yan (navel), and below to the Dan Tian (lower abdomen). Or apply simultaneously. (The text mentions burning Kuandonghua (Adenophorae Radix) and Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) for smoking therapy for lung diseases, which is very suitable and can be extended to modern smoking methods using a tube for inhalation, which is very convenient.)
