Huatan Gao (Phlegm-Resolving Plaster). Pinggan Gao (Malnutrition-Pacifying Plaster). Shacha Gao (Parasite-Killing Plaster). There are dozens of types in total. All are based on ancient formulas with modifications, but they are newly created. Having been tested for only a short time, I dare not be confident; thus, I temporarily retain their names. Just as an article has a title, those with ability can create their own according to the principles.
My *Li Yue Pian Wen* establishes treatment methods through text, comparing itself to the formats of *Jiu Jing* (Classic of Wine), *Cha Jing* (Classic of Tea), *Shu Pu* (Catalog of Calligraphy), and *Yan Pu* (Catalog of Inkstones), separately compiling the *Gaoyao Lu* (Record of Plasters). Therefore, I sought with painstaking effort, ensuring every sentence reflects treatment principles, not merely valuing symptoms, but providing specific formulas for each symptom (since there were no dedicated books for external treatments in antiquity, the emphasis is on distinguishing and establishing methods to guide future generations, which differs from printing medical prescriptions). However, some criticized the lack of categorization, the incompleteness of available formulas, and the overly profound language, which are indeed my shortcomings. I plan to extract excellent formulas from the text, extensively collect from other books, select the finest, first list syndrome differentiation, then discuss treatment, and finally prescribe medication. Each category focuses on plasters, supplemented by drugs for application, insufflation, fumigation, rubbing, hot compress, cauterization, sprinkling, and poulticing (Except for general-purpose plasters listed in a separate category, e.g., for exterior Taiyang disease, ginger and scallion plasters are primary, supplemented by Ma Huang San applied to eyes, Chuan Xiong San insufflated into nose, and Xiang Fu, Lv Hui, Zi Su fumigated on the popliteal fossa as diaphoretic auxiliaries; for interior disease, Wan Ling plaster is primary, supplemented by Tian Luo and Xiao Shi poultice replacing Wu Ling San, and Da Huang, Zhi Shi hot compress replacing Cheng Qi Tang as purgative auxiliaries. This serves as an example).
I imitated the annotation style of Wang Jin San's *Gu Fang Xuan Zhu* and Wang Ang's *Yi Fang Ji Jie*, detailing the associated meridians and acupoints. With clear structure, the principles emerge, and the methods adopted are well-founded. The *Li Yue Pian Wen* serves as a preface, summarizing the essentials, covering both superficial and deep insights. Listening and observing, due to my declining energy in old age, I leave it to later scholars to perfect. My heart for saving people knows that the world will surely resonate (For pulse diagnosis, refer to *Shi Yao* [Ten Essentials], Ke Qin's Ten Methods of Reverse and Direct Viewing, and Xu Lingtai's *Jue Si Shuo* [Identifying Life and Death]).
The above points are experiences accumulated over years. Initially, I dared not claim that external treatments would definitely be effective. Only after personally verifying ten thousand cases did I realize that plasters, like decoctions, yield immediate results when used correctly. They are especially indispensable for the elderly, infants, and the weak. Nowadays, people encounter illness and indiscriminately demand oral medication, a view so entrenched that even those wishing to avoid it cannot. This stems from ignorance of external treatments and their efficacy. Occasional failures are due to inaccurate syndrome differentiation, not ineffectiveness of the medicine. Even if ineffective, it does not necessarily lead to critical conditions, and other methods can be employed. Here, I record my daily reading and clinical insights to assist those wishing to learn external treatments. I am confident this is not empty talk from amateurs deceiving the world. As texts cannot fully express words, and words cannot fully express meaning, readers are encouraged to extend and apply these principles. This is the general outline. Those with different approaches need not force consensus. I merely pity the waste of lives and share my humble insights. In short, both internal and external treatments suffice for emergencies, but using external treatments to supplement internal ones ensures no errors for those who master both. For physicians, it seems essential to possess this external method. If one claims I despise internal treatments, how dare I say so? (Using plasters in internal medicine is also a good strategy, and patients are willing to accept it; recently, practitioners in my hometown have begun doing so.)
Volume 2, *Ji Zheng*, will follow. *Lan Tai Gui Fan* records: Someone specialized in Dan Xi's Waist-Rubbing Formula (formula recorded in the chapter) to treat somatic diseases. It was very popular among the elderly and debilitated. Sometimes added with O sulfur, Ren Shen, Lu Rong, Chen Xiang, or Shui Anxi; or alone made into pills with Ma You and Huang La, sized like walnuts, heated and rubbed on the waist. Once the waist is warm and bound, one pill can be reused. Abdominal ailments can also be treated by rubbing. This shows external treatments were practiced in antiquity. Wang Jin San stated: For acute throat wind, besides nasal insufflation to open the lungs, there is no other method. Chen Xiuyuan regarding knee-joint bi syndrome stated: Lei Huo Zhen (formula recorded in the chapter) and Chen Jie Zi Mo mixed with Cong Ti and Jiang Zhi for topical application are two external methods that must be known. This shows external treatments are valued today. *Hui Can* records: Jin Fei Cao San originally treated cold-induced phlegm cough; someone used it to fumigate tongue swelling and cured it. This shows internal formulas can be adapted for external use. These are all proofs.
Volume 4, *Ji Yi*, will follow (Omitted formulas in the text and good prescriptions sent by friends are included in this volume for publishers to consider swapping when reprinting).
