Feng Luzhan stated: There are two types of milk stasis: one is caused by abundant Qi and Blood but obstructed collaterals preventing flow, and the other is caused by deficient Qi and Blood leading to dryness and astringency. For deficiency patterns, tonification is indicated, such as with Shiquan Dabu Decoction (Complete Ten Tonifying Decoction) or Bazhen Decoction (Eight Treasures Decoction); for excess patterns, unblocking is indicated, using substances like Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), Trichosanthis Semen (Gualouren), Malvae Semen (Kuizi), Porcine Pancreas (Zhuyi), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong), Euphorbiae Fissurae (Loushu), and Pig Trotters (Zhuti). (From *Jinnang*)
If the Chong and Ren vessels have abundant blood, the Spleen and Stomach Qi are strong, and diet is regulated evenly, then milk will be sufficient and thick because the source of bio-transformation is vigorous. If Spleen and Stomach Qi are weak, food intake is reduced, and the Chong and Ren vessels are inherently deficient, then milk will be scanty and thin, and the nursing infant will also be frail and prone to illness. The quality of milk is judged as follows: milk that is thick, white, lustrous, and crystal-clear on the surface when poured into a cup is superior; yellow, clear, and thin milk is inferior and should not be fed to infants. The nursing mother should ideally be chosen from those who are neither too fat nor too thin, free from disease, with regular menstruation and a good appetite. Those who are too fat tend to have excessive phlegm-dampness, while those who are too thin tend to have excessive internal heat; drinking such milk affects the infant accordingly. For instance, there was an infant who slept deeply and did not wake all day, causing family panic. Medical treatment was ineffective until a skilled physician diagnosed it as alcohol intoxication in the child, asking if the mother had drunk heavily. This proved true; stopping medication and adjusting the mother's diet led to recovery, clearly demonstrating the significant impact of maternal factors. However, Li Shizhen stated: "Human milk has no fixed nature; it changes according to the properties of the mother's diet." Therefore, regulating the nursing mother's diet must be done with utmost caution.
