Xue Lizhai stated: When a woman's Qi and Blood are abundant, her breasts may feel distended. If she experiences pain and swelling during weaning, radiating to the chest and hypochondrium, taking this remedy will cause the symptoms to subside naturally. Use three liang of Maiya (Folium Hordei, 麦芽) stir-fried, decocted in hot water and taken orally; lactation will cease immediately. (Maiya is used to dissipate essence and cut off the source of milk production. Its dissipating power is evident, hence Bencao states it can damage Kidney Qi.)
Hui Ru Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction for Weaning): For postpartum women who have no infant to suckle, leading to hard, swollen, and unbearably painful breasts.
Ingredients: Shudi Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dong Quai), Baishao Radix Paeoniae Alba (White Peony Root), Chuanxiong Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) (each 2 qian); Dayaimai Folium Hordei (Large Barley Sprout) (2 liang, stir-fried and coarsely crushed).
Administration: Add two zhong of water, decoct until reduced to eight fen, take well after meals. Simultaneously, tightly bind both breasts with foot-binding cloth, massage by hand, and the swelling will naturally dissipate. In severe cases, administer another dose.
Another prescription: Decoct Fuxiaomai Frumentum Vulgare (Emmer Wheat) into a thick liquid and take it; lactation will cease naturally.
Verification Method: Fill a teapot with spout halfway with boiling water. Press the swollen breast against the pot opening so that the steam from the pot fumes the breast. Then, have a person hold the spout in their mouth and suck vigorously to open the lactiferous orifices. Once the water temperature is suitable, observe the surface floating matter which consists of milk; this confirms efficacy.
Another method: Insert a cat whisker into the lactiferous orifice to unblock it without causing pain; upon removing the whisker, milk flow resumes naturally.
Another method: Have an older child suckle frequently to restore flow.
Another method: Heat Gu Ye leaves (Valeriana officinalis Leaf, 谷树叶) with Zao Yan (Distiller's Grains Salt, 糟盐), apply hot compress to the breast, and milk flow will resume naturally.
Hua Mei Gao (Eyebrow Painting Ointment): Used for weaning infants.
Ingredients: Zhizi Fructus Gardeniae (Gardenia Fruit) (three fruits, burned to retain charred nature), Xionghuang Realgar (Realgar), Qingfen Calomel (Calomel), Chen Cinnabar (Cinnabar) (a small amount of each).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder, mix evenly with Sesame Oil (Youxiang, 香油). While the infant is asleep, apply a thick layer on both eyebrows. Upon waking, the infant will naturally lose the desire to suckle. If ineffective, repeat application.
Shen Douyuan stated: Wan Ju (Wrist Carbuncle) occurs along the pathways of the Foot Three Yin and Foot Three Yang meridians. It manifests near the axilla and hypochondrium, involving the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian. This meridian is characterized by abundant blood and deficient Qi. At the initial stage involving Tianchi PC17 (Tianchi, 天池穴), there is red swelling and itching below the hypochondrium and in both legs and feet. If it does not ulcerate within twenty-five days, death ensues. If punctured on the ninth day and red pus is discharged, it is treatable. If the interior is covered with dry redness surrounding the wound, and black fatty membrane is visible inside the sore, it is untreatable. This condition often arises from physical trauma such as beating or striking. (From "Qi Xuan")
