In the past, there was a person in his twenties whose breath was as foul as that of a toilet. The physician said: The Lung Metal naturally governs fishy odors; when Fire overacts on Metal, and since Fire governs foul odors, this results in halitosis. Over time, it becomes putrid; putrefaction relates to the Kidney. When hyperactive to the extreme, it reverses and assumes Water transformation. Since the disease is located in the upper jiao, emesis (Yong method) is appropriate. Following this method, he was indeed cured. (From *Jinnang*)
*Yilun Xuanyao* states: Halitosis arises from the musky and putrid qi of the zang-fu organs accumulating between the chest and diaphragm, generating heat, which rushes upward to the mouth.
Dou Hanqing stated: After a patient recovers from illness, if there is foul breath accompanied by abdominal colic, it is due to heat-toxin accumulating in the Spleen. One should urgently administer *Su Zi Jiang Qi Tang* (Perilla Fruit Decoction to Direct Qi Downward). (From *Quanshu*)
Feng Luzhan stated: Teeth belong to the Kidney. When Kidney Qi is deficient, deficient fire stagnates in the Upper Jiao, causing halitosis, termed "Chouxi" (Foul Breath).
