Some individuals, while using the toilet, going to suburban wilderness areas, visiting cold rooms, or traveling to places rarely visited by others, suddenly see ghostly or strange objects, inhale foul and malignant air through their mouth and nose, collapse abruptly, suffer from cold limbs (cold extremities), clenched fists, bleeding from the mouth and nose, with life hanging in the balance and difficult to save. This condition is called "Zhong E" (Sudden Onset of Malignant Qi). Generally, this syndrome is similar to "Shi Jue" (Corpse-like Coma), but differs in that there is no borborygmus in the abdomen, and both the heart and abdomen feel warm. Upon encountering this condition, people should immediately surround the patient without moving them. People can beat drums and build fires, or burn substances such as Moschus (She Xiang), Styrax (Su He Xiang), and Benzoin (An Xi Xiang), until the patient regains consciousness and awareness before moving them. Administer one qian of Rhinoceros Horn (Xi Jiao), five fen each of Cinnabar (Zhu Sha) and Moschus (She Xiang), finely ground, mixed with water for oral administration. Alternatively, crush Acorus Tatarinowii (Shi Chang Pu) to extract juice and instill it into the mouth and nose.
Another method: Crush fresh roots of Acorus Tatarinowii (Shi Chang Pu) to extract juice and instill it into the nose or mouth to restore vitality.
In cases of sudden "Ghost Strike" (symptoms resembling an arrow wound), place a piece of peach bark on the painful area, put a spoonful of powder on the peach bark, place moxa wool the size of a walnut on the spoon, and apply moxibustion; the illness will heal promptly. (From *Ru Men*)
If someone visits funeral sites, tombs, or temples and dies immediately upon returning home, urgently cut off a pig's tail, collect the blood, and force-feed it to the patient. Also, tie a small piglet and use it as a pillow under the patient's head; they will revive instantly.
For any case of sudden death, grind Zijin Ding (Purple Gold Pill) into juice and administer orally for immediate revival. The text states: "Zhong E" refers to contracting pathogenic qi from corpses, funerals, ancient temples, tombs, empty cold dwellings, abandoned offices, desolate gardens, altars for ghosts and gods, prayer shrines, ponds with moss, damp vines, and dense, shadowy trees. Upon contact, one falls into sudden coma, termed "Zhong E." Immediately move the patient to the eastern side of the house, fumigate with charcoal soaked in vinegar, and administer Suheli Wan (Styrax Pill) dissolved in ginger soup, or Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Powder for Regulating the Qi) is also excellent. Additionally, prick the tip of a green onion into the patient's ear until bleeding occurs to restore life; if no blood flows, the case is untreatable. If accompanied by severe vomiting and diarrhea, or bleeding from the mouth and nose, it is untreatable.
Hug and stabilize the patient firmly, and slowly administer warm wine to revive them. If bleeding occurs from the nine orifices, squeeze the juice from a handful of Dandelion Root (Da Ji) and mix it with half a cup of good wine for immediate consumption. If fresh Da Ji is unavailable, grind dried Da Ji into powder and administer three qian with boiling water. Drawing the first bucket of well water early in the morning is also effective.
The text states: "Xia Sha" refers to death caused by extreme fright and terror.
