It is strictly forbidden to use hot water or fire for warming. Immediately stir-fry ashes in a large pot, place them in a cloth bag, and apply the bag to the heart region, as well as moxa-like compressing the area between the umbilicus and abdomen. Several such bags should be prepared; replace them when they cool down. Administer warm wine and ginger soup, cover the patient with thick quilts to keep warm, ensuring the blood vessels remain harmonious and unobstructed. If the body gradually warms up, the patient can be revived. The *Secret Essentials* states: A person who has died from freezing can still be revived within one day; beyond this time, it is untreatable.
It also states: If the heart region is not warmed first, and fire is applied directly to the body, the cold qi will contend with the heat, leading to death.
Furthermore, it says: Wrap the frozen person tightly in a thick cotton quilt and have two people push them back and forth to promote blood circulation. Once the body gradually warms up, revival is possible. If no cotton quilt is available, new straw mats can be used instead.
It is strictly forbidden to drink cold water, and the patient must not lie on cold ground.
Immediately move the patient to a shady place. Crush garlic, mix it with hot earth from the road and water, strain out the dregs, and administer the liquid orally. Then, scoop up hot earth from the road, pile it around the umbilicus to form a hollow, and have several people urinate into it. The warmth penetrating through the umbilicus will cause the patient to regain consciousness.
Another method: Urgently administer ginger soup or urine of a young boy while hot. Externally, dip a cloth in hot water and compress the acupoint three cun below the umbilicus until the patient wakes up immediately. After waking, it is strictly forbidden to drink cold water; doing so will cause immediate death.
It also states: When drying clothes in summer, do not put them directly into chests or cabinets, lest they cause heatstroke in winter when worn. If allowed to cool thoroughly before storage, this hazard is avoided.
If there is already a lamp, keep it lit; if not, do not light a lamp. Instead, bite the heel firmly and bite the big toe, frequently spit on the face, and then administer ginger soup. Alternatively, use powder of *Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus* (Zaojiao, 皂角), fresh crushed *Pinelliae Rhizoma* (Banxia, 半夏), or blow powder of *Realgar* (Xionghuang, 雄黄) into the nostrils. Revival occurs upon sneezing. For all cases of sudden death and sleep paralysis (Yan si), urgently moxa the Renzhong (GV26, 人中) acupoint and the areas on the inner side of both big toes, about the width of a leek away from the nail, applying seven moxa cones (zhuang) to revive the patient. (From *Bencao Gangmu*).
For all cases of sleep paralysis and sudden evil invasion (Zhong e), strictly avoid using fire to illuminate which may cause panic. Drip blood from a black-bone chicken into the mouth, and the patient will revive immediately.
Bian Que said: The "Five Extinctions" include: one, hanging by oneself; two, falling and hitting against walls; three, drowning; four, possession by evil spirits (Yan mei); five, difficult childbirth. All these cases should be treated with one liang of raw *Pinelliae Rhizoma* (Banxia, 半夏), pounded and sifted. Blow an amount the size of a soybean into the nostrils, and the patient will revive. Some use raw *Pinelliae Rhizoma* (Banxia, 半夏) powder mixed with water to form pills the size of small beans, insert them into the nostrils, and also blow the powder into the ears. Cases where the chest remains warm for one day can still be saved, but unfortunately, people are ignorant of this method. Seeing that breath has ceased, they often fail to provide treatment, which is truly regrettable!
