Sores resembling gan (a type of ulcerative lesion in TCM) appear on the ear.
Coptis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) [prepared by removing fibrous roots and honey-frying multiple times] and Catechu (Ercha, 儿茶) [in equal parts], Calomelas (Qingfen, 轻粉) [half a spoon], Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian, 冰片) and Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) [each in small amounts]. Grind them together into a fine powder and apply externally.
Sores appearing behind the ear are named Kidney Gan (Shen Gan,
Ground Cortex Lycii (Dibiepi, 地骨皮): for coarse texture, decoct in water to wash the ear; for fine texture, mix with Sesame Oil (Xiangyou, 香油) and apply.
Ear Gan (Er Gan, 耳疳) discharging pus.
Crush Walnut Kernel (Hetaoren, 核桃仁), extract one qian of oil, add three fen of Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian, 冰片). Apply a small amount into the ear each time.
Wang Kentang stated: The ear is also referred to as Ear Dampness (Er Shi, 耳湿), often discharging yellow pus. (*Zhunsheng*)
He further stated: This condition arises from the upward congestion of Wind-Heat in the Foot-Shaoyin and Hand-Shaoyang meridians.
Feng Luzhan stated: In cases of Excess Heat, it results from surplus Kidney Qi and accumulated Heat rushing upward, causing stagnation and accumulation of body fluids, thus forming Ear Gan. There are five types of Ear Gan names: those frequently discharging yellow pus are called Ear Gan; those discharging red pus are called Pus Ear (Nong Er, 脓耳); those with a gangrenous odor inside the ear are called Cold Ear (Hu Er, 冱耳); those discharging white pus are called Entangled Ear (Chan Er, 缠耳); and those experiencing empty ringing in the ear with occasional discharge of green pus are called Sack Ear (Nang Er, 囊耳). Although the names differ, they all stem from accumulated Heat congesting upward or Wind-Water invading the ear. If not treated promptly, it may lead to deafness over time. Treatment should focus on clearing Fire and nourishing Blood, or eliminating Dampness and resolving toxicity, after which the ailment will heal naturally. (*Jinnang*)
Thousand Gold Unchanging Pill (Secret Formula)
Polyporus Water Dragon Bone (Shuailonggu, 水龙骨) [one qian], Borax (Pengsha, 硼砂) [five fen].
Grind into powder. Blow into the ear cavity, then plug with cotton. Two applications can eradicate the root cause.
Regardless of whether pus has appeared, Divine Efficacy Formula (provided by Zhou Hexian): Burn human hair on a new tile until charred but retaining its medicinal properties, grind into a fine powder, and sieve. For every one qian of ash, add seven li of genuine Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian, 冰片), grind uniformly, and blow a small amount into the ear. Highly effective.
Verified Formula: Char Red Swineheart Beet (Yanzhi, 胭脂) into ash, grind into powder, add a small amount of Borneolum Syntheticum, and blow into the ear.
Verified Formula: Squeeze juice from pickled eggplant and drip into the ear for immediate cure.
Wang Kentang stated: Empty ringing in the ear accompanied by frequent discharge of clear pus is named Trembling Ear (Zhen Er, 震耳). This is caused by Wind-Heat congestion in the Foot-Shaoyin and Hand-Shaoyang meridians. (*Zhunsheng*)
Feng Luzhan stated: Empty ringing in the ear with frequent discharge of green pus is named Sack Ear (Nang Er, 囊耳). This results from surplus Kidney Qi, accumulated Heat congesting upward, or Wind-Water invading the ear. The treatment method should involve clearing Fire and nourishing Blood, or eliminating Dampness and resolving toxicity. (*Jinnang*)
