She Bi (Tongue Numbness and Stiffness) manifests as stiffness and numbness of the tongue. It is caused by mental disturbance, excessive worry or sudden anger, leading to Qi stagnation and the formation of Phlegm-Fire.
Verified Prescriptions:
Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) and Xionghuang (Realgar), in equal parts, are ground into powder. Take one qian with a decoction of Mutong (Akebiae Caulis).
For tongue numbness due to Phlegm obstruction, apply Shengfan (Alumen) powder directly to the affected area.
Another prescription: Apply Zaofang Mo (Gleditsiae Sinensis Powder) to the affected area.
Kui Guang stated: Yellow coating on the tongue refers to yellow growth on the tongue surface accompanied by swelling and pain; this also belongs to Heart Fire.
Kui Guang stated: She Jun (Tongue Fungus) is attributed to Heart Fire, often arising from Qi depression. The growth on the tongue may resemble wood ear fungus or mushroom shapes, with a red-purple color.
Kui Guang stated: In the early stage of She Yong (Tongue Abscess), the tongue is red and swollen, indicating excess Fire in the Heart Meridian; the corners of the jaw (Di Jiao) will also be red and swollen. Initially, use Jin Dan (Golden Pill) and Bi Dan (Green Pill) insufflated into the root of the tongue. (Prescriptions recorded in the Throat Section.) Add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) to the decoction.
The Classics state: The Heart opens into the tongue.
Chen Shigong stated: Excess Heart Fire causes sores in the mouth and tongue. (*Waike Zhengzong*)
Qi Tianshi stated: The tongue is the sprout of the Heart; when Heart Fire is depressed and hot, the tongue manifests symptoms first. (*Yizong Milu*)
Feng Luzhan stated: The Classics state: The tongue is the sprout of the Heart. It is also said: The central color is yellow, corresponding to the Spleen, opening into the mouth, storing essence in the Spleen, thus disease manifests in the tongue. It is further said: The Heart Meridian connects to the root of the tongue, and the Spleen Meridian links to the sides of the tongue and ties under the tongue. Therefore, when disease occurs, whether it is sores, Chong She (Double Tongue), Mu She (Wood Tongue), or other syndromes, they are all caused by these two meridians. However, the Liver Meridian also connects to the root of the tongue; thus, Wind-Cold causes retraction and inability to speak, while Seven Emotions depression causes swelling that does not subside. Heart Heat causes cracking and sores; Spleen Heat causes slipperiness and coating; Spleen Cold causes white coating like snow; Liver Qi stagnation with heat causes blood congestion upward. If a person suffers from She Bi without cause, it should not be treated as Wind-Heat. This is due to insufficient Heart Blood, where Blood deficiency leads to Fire scorching; it should be treated with Lizhong Tang combined with Siwu Tang. (*Yifang Jinnang*)
It is also said: Previously, someone had sores on the tongue that eroded into cavities over time. Cooling medicines were ineffective. This was due to deficiency-cold in the Lower Yuan, with deficient Fire failing to descend; treatment with Yangzheng Dan led to recovery.
Qi Tianshi stated: If a person suddenly develops a sore on the tongue protruding more than one cun outside, forming a yellow crust on top and making eating difficult, people assume it is a Heart disease because Heart Heat generates such sores. This seems reasonable but is incorrect; it may also be caused by pathogenic influences possessing the body. The prescription uses Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), one fen, placed inside a clam shell, which instantly dissolves into water. Then, apply this liquid to the protrusion using a goose feather brush; the tongue will immediately retract, allowing for eating and drinking. Clams are substances of extreme Yin; using an extreme Yin substance to attack extreme Yin pathogens causes the pathogens to retreat naturally. Furthermore, Bingpian’s acrid-warm nature drives out pathogens with full force, ensuring success.
Dou Hanqing stated: When Heat-Toxin attacks the tongue, sores form; when external Wind dries up the fluids, the tongue becomes stiff. Wang Shuhe stated: Rapid pulses in all three positions indicate Heart Heat, causing sores on the tongue and cracked lips. The treatment method should be to cool the Heart and clear Heat. (*Yizong Quan Shu*)
It is also said: Swelling in the throat accompanied by sores on the tongue indicates Heat in the Heart Meridian. Long-standing pathogenic Heat in the Heart leads to Hou Bi (Throat Closure); residual toxins remaining in the Heart cause tongue sores. Treatment requires Bingsan San and Xuanshen Shengma Tang with modifications.
Dou Menglin stated: Sores in the mouth and tongue resembling yellow millet grains, accompanied by aversion to cold and open mouth externally. First use clam water, or field snail water, or rinse with tea, then apply medicine.
Li Shizhen stated: There are four apertures under the tongue: two connect to Heart Qi, and two connect to Kidney Fluids. Heart Qi flows into the underside of the tongue, becoming Shen Shui (Divine Water); Kidney Fluids flow into the underside of the tongue, becoming Ling Ye (Spiritual Fluid). Daoists call them Jinjiang Yuli (Golden Elixir and Jade Nectar). Overflowing, they become Liquor Spring; gathering, they become Hua Chi (Splendid Pool); scattering, they become Body Fluids; descending, they become Sweet Dew. Thus, they irrigate the Zang-Fu organs and moisten the limbs. Therefore, cultivators swallow saliva and absorb Qi, called "Clear Water Irrigating the Spiritual Root." If a person does not spit for a whole day, Essence and Qi remain, and the complexion does not wither; if one spits excessively, Essence and Qi are damaged, leading to Lung disease and dry skin. Hence, it is said that distant spitting is inferior to near spitting, and near spitting is inferior to not spitting at all. When a person is ill, Heart and Kidney do not interact, Kidney Water fails to ascend, resulting in dry fluids and consumption of True Qi. The *Nanjing* states: The Kidney governs Yu Ye (Jade Fluid); entering the Liver it becomes tears, entering the Lung it becomes nasal mucus, entering the Spleen it becomes saliva, entering the Heart it becomes sweat, and self-entering it becomes spit.
