Eliminates indurated swelling and relieves soreness and pain; it is particularly effective for conditions of Yin-cold nature.
*Impatiens glandulifera Herba* (Jixingzi)
Grind the single herb into powder, use an appropriate amount according to the severity of the condition, mix with aged hot wine, and apply topically to the affected area. Cover with a warm plaster externally, or mix into the warm plaster to make a thick paste for application, which is also excellent.
[Formula Analysis] *Impatiens glandulifera Herba* has the most intense medicinal property. When taken internally, it induces labor and aborts fetuses with rapid effect. For external treatment, it should be able to unblock meridians and enter collaterals, dissipate swelling and relieve pain, with efficacy as swift as shadow following form. This was conceived by my own intention (Shouyi), tested and found effective. Naming it "Du Sheng" (Solely Holy) is fully justified.
Treats summer-heat sores and heat boils in their early stages; can eliminate indurated masses and relieve pain. The liquid is dark like soy sauce. Those who listen to hearsay claim that Western-style soy sauce water can disinfect, referring to this preparation.
Iodine Tablets (1.5 qian) / Spiritus Vini Rectificatus (4 liang)
The medicine dissolves immediately upon entering the wine. When used, dip a brush into the solution and paint it on the affected area; it dries instantly after one stroke. Do not apply frequently; wait five to six hours before applying again. Small boils on the skin will naturally dissipate. If applied excessively, it causes the epidermis to rot and exudate to spread, causing harm instead.
[Formula Analysis] This is a Western method. Western scholars also consider it a common item. However, the power of Iodine is extremely fierce. Stored in porcelain bottles, if ground with a wooden pestle, it can penetrate deep into the muscle tissue to eliminate induration. But since the medicinal nature enters from the outside, it is akin to the properties of strong acids (Xiao Qiang). Frequent use causes the skin to rot while the internal induration remains unchanged. Therefore, it is only effective for small boils located superficially in the skin. If the mass is slightly deeper, the medicinal power cannot reach the disease site; even if the epidermis rots, it cannot eliminate the induration and swelling. It is often seen that people use it to treat scrofula and phlegm nodules, conditions deeply hidden in the meridians, where only disadvantages are seen without benefits. This stems from a failure to understand and study the nature of the drugs.
In the early stage of ulcerative diseases, if there is a palpable mass, applying the Tuixiao Plaster is already applicable. However, for diffuse swelling without boundaries and unclear roots, plasters are useless. Only powdered敷药 (topical powders) can be applied all over the affected area to consolidate the swelling, and mild cases can also dissipate. In the market, there is a product called Ruyi Jinhuang San. Although it is not a universally commonly used item, it is recorded in all surgical texts. However, the ingredients are somewhat complex; it is effective for mild cases but insufficient for severe ones. Moreover, relying solely on this one formula to treat all conditions of cold, heat, deficiency, and excess is too general and imprecise. Xu Huixi stated, "Each syndrome requires specific essential herbs; generic formulas cannot achieve efficacy." This statement certainly has merit here. However, preparing different topical powders for every syndrome is too cumbersome. That old gentleman (referring to Xu Huixi) might have been exaggerating to deceive people. My master's school, the Zhu family, divided them into warm and cool types, similar to the classification of plasters, making them versatile. Concise yet comprehensive, this approach is worthy of emulation.
