After recovery, food intake gradually increases, but bowel movements may not occur for ten days or half a month, without causing discomfort. This is due to dryness of the intestines and stomach caused by febrile disease, where blood fails to moisten and Qi fails to propel.
If purgatives are mistakenly used, death will occur within a day.
In cases with the heaviest toxic fire, Qi and Blood are scorched. As food intake recovers after illness, Qi and Blood generate and circulate through the skin and permeate the entire body, causing sensations of pain or itching, resembling insects crawling. This is an auspicious sign; within two or three days, as Qi and Blood flow smoothly, self-healing occurs.
If epidemic disease is mismanaged in the early stage, heat flows downward and stagnates in the meridians, leading to pain in the waist and knees. In severe cases, the patient cannot stand or move while lying down. Mistaking this for Wei Syndrome (flaccidity syndrome) will inevitably result in permanent disability. (Clinical Experience)
After recovery, there is a lack of appetite, and even if food is consumed, it is not digested. This indicates Spleen and Stomach deficiency, requiring methods to strengthen the Spleen and nourish the Stomach.
After recovery, Blood deficiency causes the Liver to lose its nourishment, and the Gallbladder loses its support, manifesting as timidity and palpitations.
After illness, Water declines and Fire flares up, leading to a failure of communication between the Heart and Kidney, resulting in restlessness and agitation.
Hoarseness or inability to speak after illness is due to Yin deficiency failing to ascend and connect with Yang.
Zheng Sheng (feeble, repetitive speech) characterized by trembling, weak voice and disjointed sentences indicates Qi deficiency.
Excessive salivation that cannot be controlled after illness indicates Cold in the Stomach, requiring warming therapy. However, excessive saliva secretion after the resolution of febrile disease, although related to Stomach deficiency, still involves residual Heat; warming therapy is contraindicated. Instead, Mei Zao Wan (Plum and Jujube Pill) should be held in the mouth for immediate relief.
Speech is the voice of the Heart. Delirium during illness is caused by Stomach Heat invading the Heart; excessive talking after recovery is due to residual Heat. It is like extinguishing a fire: although the flames have died out, smoke remains.
The Heart governs Essence, and the Kidney stores and controls it. After illness, deficiency of Qi in the Heart and Kidney leads to a loss of control, resulting in seminal emission.
Easily startled by events and restless sleep after illness indicate residual Heat; extreme Heat generates Phlegm, which clashes with Qi, causing fear.
Constant drowsiness, confusion, or moaning is caused by incomplete elimination of pathogenic Heat, which lies latent in the Pericardium Meridian.
The Heart stores Blood internally and manifests as Sweat externally. Sweat is the fluid of the Heart, and the Kidney governs the Five Fluids. Therefore, sweat disorders always originate from the Heart and Kidney. Yang Deficiency fails to defend the exterior and secure the surface, leading to spontaneous sweating upon external injury; Yin Deficiency fails to nourish the interior and store essence, leading to night sweats upon internal injury.
