After the recovery from illness, if Heart Blood is deficient and the Heart loses its nourishment, it leads to an unsettled Mind Spirit (Shen).
If both Qi and Blood are deficient after recovery, the Spirit fails to reside within, resulting in vexation and insomnia.
If a patient engages in sexual intercourse too early after recovering from a major illness, it is called "female labor relapse" (relapse due to male sexual activity). If a woman suffers relapse due to sexual activity, it is called "male labor relapse." The symptoms include a heavy head that cannot be lifted, visual hallucinations (seeing flowers), pain in the lower back and waist, and weakness in the four limbs. There is aversion to cold with fever, rising of Yin Fire causing flushing of the head and face, and vexation and oppression in the chest and heart. *Huoren Shu* (Book of Vitality) recommends using Shushi Tang (Rat Dropping Decoction) as the primary treatment; for those with heat, Zhupi Tang (Bamboo Peel Decoction) or Shaosan (Burned Undergarment Powder) should be used. *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) recommends Chiyi San (Red Garment Powder); for those who are weak, mixing it with Renshen Sanbai Tang (Ginseng Three Whites Decoction) is most excellent. For cases with a deep and fine pulse, cold extremities, and acute pain in the lower abdomen, Danggui Sini San (Angelica Decoctio Frigida Extremorum Powder) added with Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) and Wuyu (Evodia Fruit), mixed with Chiyi San, should be used to save the patient. Furthermore, frying one sheng of Wuyu with wine and applying it hot to the lower abdomen is most effective. In cases where the man's testicles retract into the abdomen, or the woman's breasts retract, accompanied by a pulse deviating from the normal course, death is inevitable and incurable. I treat labor relapse using Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) and often achieve efficacy.
If residual heat remains after recovery, and the intestines and stomach are weak, forcing food intake when unable to eat causes heat to be retained. Because grain qi lingers and struggles, combining with existing heat (two Yangs merging) leads to disease, named "food relapse."
If a man, whose Yuan Qi has not yet recovered after illness, engages in intercourse with a woman and falls ill, it is called "Yang Yi" (Yang Exchange). If a woman, whose Yuan Qi has not yet recovered, engages in intercourse with a man and falls ill, it is called "Yin Yi" (Yin Exchange). The manifestations are: in men, swelling of the genitals retracting into the abdomen with unbearable colicky pain; in women, retraction of the nipples, internal tension, pain radiating from the waist and hips, heat attacking the chest and diaphragm from within the abdomen, heaviness of the head making it difficult to lift, inability to lie flat comfortably, and restlessness with inability to move. This is a critical condition.
Erythema caused by plague toxin represents the dispersion of toxin; sores caused by plague toxin represent the aggregation of toxin. At the initial stage, aversion to cold with fever, redness, swelling, hardness, and pain indicate the toxin emerging outward; aversion to cold without fever, flat and non-elevated lesions indicate the toxin lying latent inward. Whether occurring in vital areas, nameless places, on the head and face, or on the limbs, these various forms are all sores. How can one know they are plague? By examining the pulse and verifying the symptoms, it becomes clear. The pulse for sores is surging and rapid, whereas for plague it is deep, fine, and rapid. Sores present with heat first then cold; plague presents with cold first then heat. Sores may or may not have headache; plague features severe headache as if splitting, with heaviness preventing lifting. These are the diagnostic criteria. Examining the symptoms: there are cases of red eyes and ruddy complexion with cyan undertones, alternating sweating and dryness, stupor resembling confusion, fever with cold limbs, unceasing abdominal pain, severe vomiting and dry heaving, profuse diarrhea like a gush, incessant delirious speech, auditory and visual hallucinations, extreme thirst desiring water, irritability resembling madness, shouting and crying out intermittently, and states of惊惧 (fear and alarm). The mental and physical manifestations are diverse but largely similar. If mistakenly treated as ordinary sores, rescue is impossible.
