[Symptoms of Vomiting Caused by Summer-Heat] When the pathogenic factor of summer-heat is prevalent, symptoms include dizziness and dim vision, sudden onset of vomiting, fever with aversion to cold, irritability and thirst with a desire to drink, dry teeth and parched lips, abdominal pain, red urine, or turbid urine with dysuria and oliguria. These are the symptoms of vomiting caused by summer-heat.
[Etiology of Vomiting Caused by Summer-Heat] During the transition between summer and autumn, if the Middle Qi (Vital Energy of the Spleen and Stomach) is deficient, the pathogenic factor of summer-heat enters the intestines and stomach, leading to vomiting.
[Pulse Signs of Vomiting Caused by Summer-Heat] The pulse may be empty, large, and choppy; or deep and fine; or deep and rapid; or restless and rapid; or hidden (deeply concealed).
[Treatment of Vomiting Caused by Summer-Heat] If there is Qi deficiency with an empty and large pulse, use Jia Mi Xiang Ru Yin (Secret Formula of Elsholtzia Decoction). If there is Heat in the Qi level with irritability and thirst, and a deep and rapid pulse, use Renshen Shigao Tang (Ginseng and Gypsum Decoction). If there is red, turbid urine with dysuria and oliguria, use Tu Huoxiang Tang (Patchouli Decoction), administered with Yi Yuan San (Benefit Primordial Powder). If there is irritability, heat, and vomiting, use Zhi Lian Ping Wei San (Gardenia and Coptis Formula for Invigorating the Stomach); add Gan Ge (Kudzu Root) and Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings) for thirst; if there is phlegm-fluid, use Zhi Lian Er Chen Tang (Gardenia and Coptis Two-Chen Decoction).
[Formula Composition and Modifications]
Jia Mi Xiang Ru Yin (Secret Formula of Elsholtzia Decoction): Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Xiangru (Elsholtziae Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). Add Gan Ge (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) for thirst; add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) for phlegm.
Renshen Shigao Tang (Ginseng and Gypsum Decoction): See section on Dysphagia and Regurgitation previously.
Yi Yuan San (Benefit Primordial Powder): Also known as Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder).
Zhi Lian Ping Wei San (Gardenia and Coptis Formula for Invigorating the Stomach): Ping Wei San (Formula for Invigorating the Stomach) plus Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
Zhi Lian Er Chen Tang (Gardenia and Coptis Two-Chen Decoction): Er Chen Tang (Two-Chen Decoction) plus Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
[Symptoms of Vomiting Caused by Dampness] There is fullness and oppression in the chest, heaviness of the head and body, edema of the face and eyes, nausea and vomiting, no thirst in the mouth, and expectoration of copious phlegm-fluid. These are the symptoms of vomiting caused by dampness.
[Etiology of Vomiting Caused by Dampness] During the late summer season, sitting or lying in low and damp places allows dampness to invade the Stomach Earth, preventing Stomach Qi from descending, thereby causing vomiting due to dampness.
[Pulse Signs of Vomiting Caused by Dampness] The pulse is mostly soggy and soft, or floating and moderate, or deep and hidden. A slow pulse indicates Cold, while a rapid pulse indicates Heat.
[Treatment of Vomiting Caused by Dampness] If there is fever and a floating pulse, it is appropriate to release the exterior and harmonize the Stomach, assisted by acrid-aromatic warming dispersants. Use Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxification Powder) with added Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) and Zisu (Perillae Folium), or Xiang Su Ping Wei San (Patchouli and Perilla Formula for Invigorating the Stomach). For those with Cold-Dampness and constitutional deficiency, use Xiang Sha Er Chen Tang (Patchouli and Amomum Two-Chen Decoction); if Cold is severe, use Shu Fu Tang (Atractylodes and Aconite Decoction). If diuresis is indicated, use Ping Wei Wu Ling San (Invigorating the Stomach and Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria Decoction). For Damp-Heat, use Zhi Lian Er Chen Ping Wei San (Gardenia, Coptis, Two-Chen, and Invigorating the Stomach Powder) and modify according to the condition.
