The general laws of the six qi (Six Qi) in the four seasons determine Tianxing (epidemic eye diseases), and disharmony between the host qi (Host Qi) and guest qi (Guest Qi) leads to eye diseases. Once a person is infected, it can also affect others; the condition spreads from the left eye to the right eye, following the pattern of meridian transmission. Without cause, tears and nasal discharge flow continuously, and thread-like secretions (Qiusi) form and rotate in the eyes. When vision becomes obscured as if by floating clouds covering the sun, how can the condition be resolved without TCM treatment?
This syndrome presents with redness and pain in the eyes, photophobia, and simultaneous tearing and rhinorrhea. Sometimes accompanied by eyelid swelling, headache, aversion to cold, and fever. This results from the circulation of seasonal pathogens and the invasion of pathogenic heat. In general terms: When Shaoyin governs the heaven phase, wind-heat is distributed, causing agitation in clouds and objects, leading to closed eyes and pain; when Taiyin governs the heaven phase, damp-earth flows horizontally, cold arrives at its time, and qi stagnates above, causing swollen and red/ulcerated eyelids; when Jueyin governs the heaven phase, wind-dryness and fire invade, causing eye damage. Or when water is deficient and metal is weak, wood insults what it overcomes, causing blurred vision and tearing; when ministerial fire holds authority, yang qi spreads, and the climate becomes very warm, excessive fire causes red eyes. When Yangming is excessive, dryness prevails, causing white eyes to swell and ulcerate; when cold-water is insufficient, dampness dominates, and upon return, great storms occur, causing visual disturbances [KT KT]. Individuals who already suffer from jue disorders, or have excess phlegm-fire, water deficiency, or primordial deficiency, may transmit the disease differently. If the root source is clear, then pathogen cannot overcome righteous qi, and self-healing occurs within seven days. Since the number for fire is seven, by the seventh day, the fire qi is exhausted. If not healed after seven days but persisting into two sevens (14 days), it indicates secondary transmission. If unchanged after two sevens, there must have been further provocation. Treatment follows the luck theory: initially disperse using Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), or Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang (Bupleurum and Kudzu Muscle-Releasing Decoction); if unresolved, use Da Qing Long Tang (Great Azure Dragon Decoction) or Shishen Tang (Ten Spirits Decoction); if exterior symptoms cease but interior urgency arises, use Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) or Bazheng San (Eight Righteousness Powder); if symptoms decrease, harmonize using Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), or Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Drink); if symptoms do not decrease but increase, verify symptoms and pulse, select either attacking or tonifying formulas, adjust them to fit the pattern, and regulate accordingly, so that other complications do not arise.
Heaven is clear, Earth is peaceful; where does the guest qi come from to offend a scholar? Night rain, green lamp, morning wind, fading moon, body in an empty courtyard. At one moment, cold and heat mix together; at the swollen eyelids, tears and discharge drift down. Opacity forms on the pearl (cornea), cinnabar enters the jade (iris/conjunctiva), urgently difficult to calm.
This syndrome arises from dryness, urgency, labor, and hardship, with unclear nourishment, suddenly attacked by external wind-pathogen and internal accumulation of phlegm-fluid, causing all five fires to move and yin-yang to alternate in dominance. Yang dominance causes steaming heat; yin dominance causes chills. Yin-yang struggle, pathogen and righteous qi interfere, leading to alternating chills and fever. The syndrome resembles Tianxing but does not worsen through contagion. If medicine does not produce a reaction (Mingxuan), opacity will form the next day. Initially, Xiong Su San (Sichuan Lovage and Perilla Powder) or Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Drink); when exterior and interior symptoms appear, use Shuangjie San (Double Resolution Powder); when exterior ceases and interior is heavy, with strong fire pressing upward, use Three Chengqi Decoctions or Sanyou Wan (Three Friends Pill); if quiet during day and severe at night, this is yang qi sinking into yin, named Re Ru Xue Shi (Heat Entering Blood Chamber), use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Danpi (Moutan Cortex) and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome); if unresolved, use Fangfeng Sanjie Tang (Saposhnikovia Knot-Resolving Decoction) or Sanhuang Qingre Wan (Three Yellows Heat-Clearing Pill); for women, use Xiaoning Xingjing San (Resolve Congestion and Regulate Menses Powder); if momentum slightly declines, use Lingxi Xiaoyao San (Antelope Horn and Rhinoceros Horn Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), then Chonghe Yangzheng Tang (Harmonizing and Supporting Righteous Qi Decoction); or if choosing scenic lakes and mountains, indulging in voice and music, leading to current illness, initially administer Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting and Qi-Supplementing Decoction) plus Manjingzi (Vernonia Seed) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root); if pulse is deep and slow, add Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), then Shenxiao Huang [Tang] (Divine Efficacy Yellow [Decoction]), finally Peiyuan San (Nourish Origin Powder) combined with Shengshu Dihuang Yin (Raw and Prepared Rehmannia Decoction) for recovery. If careless and bold, blindly administering previous medicines, half of the pathological changes will be difficult to overcome. "Yaohan" states "Baofeng" (Violent Wind), yet discusses it lightly; states "Kere" (Guest Heat), yet does not teach urgent treatment. It intends to force both doctors and patients to become blind, which can be called cruel.
