Yang heat consumes Yin fluids; if Yin is exhausted, life ends. Therefore, the priority is to extinguish fire, followed by nourishing water. Compiled cold-natured formulas:
Du Huo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Man Jing Zi (Fructus Viticis), Qian Hu (Radix Peucedani), Qiang Huo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Bai Zhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) [each 2 qian], Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Huang Bo (Cortex Phellodendri), Fang Ji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae), Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) [each 3 qian], Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Zhi Ren (Semen Gossypii Herbacei), Han Shui Shi (Lapis Aquae Frigidae), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) [each 5 qian].
It was once said: "If even one part of Yin Qi remains unexhausted, one cannot become an immortal; if even one part of Yang Qi remains unexhausted, one will not die." Now, this person's pure Yang is hyperactive to the extreme, and Yin has been almost completely consumed. Logically, they should undergo 'Shijie' (a form of Daoist immortality where the body is left behind), ride the white clouds, and roam in the nine heavens without returning. However, if they wish to remain in the human world for a while, they must personally take this medicine. Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Man Jing Zi, Qian Hu, Bai Zhi, Qiang Huo and Du Huo, and Gan Cao are substances that ascend but do not descend; they are used to suppress the outward escape of Yang, preventing mutual invasion. Zhi Mu, Huang Bo, Sheng Di Huang, Zhi Ren, Fang Ji, Han Shui Shi, Huang Qin, and Huang Lian are cold-natured substances that move freely; they force Yang to descend directly, thereby providing slight relief to the upper body. This is also a method of simultaneously releasing both the exterior and interior. Mixing with wine serves primarily for 'Bao Feng Ke Re' (acute external wind-heat affecting the eyes), where eye pain feels like burning. Wine acts as a guide; due to affinity in nature, it allows the herbs to exert their full effect upon entry. This constitutes a contrary treatment method. Ni transformed this powder into pills to treat contraction of the pupil (Tong Shen). If the patient survives, the eye condition need not be further questioned.
Poem:
Ping Qiang, Man Cao, Xiang Ru Zhi,
Di, Bai, Zhi, Qin still bring joy,
Wind comes overnight before Shui Shi,
Sleeping alone, sigh not for lack of confidants.
Lu Hui (Aloe), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Hu Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis or similar bitter cold herb), Chuan Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), He Shi (Ascaris), Lei Wan (Fructus Ilicis Chinensis), Wu Ti (Fructus Pruni Mume) [each 1 liang], She Xiang (Moschus) [2 qian], Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) [pill made with paste, coated with Qing Dai].
This formula is indicated for pediatric malnutrition (Gan Ji) affecting the eyes.
Gan toxicity originally damages the Spleen and Stomach, yet physicians often discuss it in terms of the Liver. Why? Because Wood (Liver) originates from Earth (Spleen). If Earth contains fatty turbidity, it inevitably invades Wood. When Wind cannot overcome Dampness, Dampness becomes excessive and generates Fire, which then overacts on the Spleen and Stomach. Thus, the root of this disease lies in Earth, while the branch manifestation lies in Wood. The current eye disease indicates that the branch manifestation is more urgent than the root. Therefore, Lu Hui, Hu Huang Lian, Chuan Huang Lian, Lei Wan, He Shi, and Wu Ti—a group of bitter and pungent substances—are directed into the Liver to clear Gan toxicity and kill parasites. She Xiang, Mu Xiang, and Qing Pi are used to disperse stale, stagnant, and depressed Qi, allowing Earth and Wood to coexist peacefully. Shen Qu and Qing Dai are used because they are herbs for the Liver and Spleen, adhering to the principle of "things gathering by kind." For children suffering from Gan erosion or Gan accumulation, this formula should be taken even if no eye disease is present.
