This nebula (corneal opacity) is thin yet dense in substance, its color and form resembling agate. Although the pupil spirit (Shen Guang) is not yet damaged, the root penetrates deeply. As it remains unchanged, how can medicine and acupuncture be effective?
This condition involves a nebula forming on the Wind Wheel (Black Cornea), half-covering the Spirit Light. If it arises from the junction of the White Sclera and the Black Cornea, vision may remain clear without blurring. At first glance, it appears superficial, but upon closer inspection, it is clearly internal, varying in thickness and shape (round or irregular). Its color may be azure, yellowish-black, or slightly red, resembling agate. This is likely caused by head wind pain attacking, where cooling medicines have depleted body fluids, leading to the condensation of cold toxins; it may even affect both eyes. If accompanied by turbidity of the Water Wheel (Pupil/Crystalline Lens area) resulting in blindness, a physician who can alleviate even one or two symptoms would be considered a master doctor.
Qingmang (Green Blindness) is not as sudden or peculiar as Baomang (Sudden Blindness); Baomang comes quickly, while Qingmang develops slowly. The most feared scenario is when an elderly person's vital spirit is seized, or when emaciation indicates the depletion of essence and blood. In cases of Spleen atrophy and Gallbladder deficiency, even miraculous arts like those in the *Qingnang* (ancient medical text) are ineffective. Alas! Who perceives the illness of one suffering from Qingmang? Even Confucius might not act upon seeing it.
In this condition, there are no opacities inside or outside the eye; the Golden Well (Pupil) is neither large nor small, appearing normal like that of a healthy person, yet the patient cannot see. Initially, there may be diplopia (seeing obliquely) or shortened visual range, occasionally with the Shen Gao (Vitreous Humor) turning green or the Water Wheel turning yellow.
There are two causes: First, Heart-Kidney non-interaction. The Heart is the residence of the Spirit, requiring stillness and peace; the Kidney stores Essence, requiring firmness and secrecy. Lack of peace and secrecy constitutes non-interaction. Non-interaction leads to the dissipation of spirit and essence. Dissipated essence consumes Yin, causing oblique vision (like the waning moon approaching darkness); dissipated spirit consumes Yang, causing shortened vision (like an untrimmed lamp wick dimming). When both spirit and Yin-Yang dissipate, Ying-Wei Qi becomes blocked (Guan Ge), and the eyes become dim as if in eternal night. Second, Jia-Ji non-compliance. Jia corresponds to the Gallbladder, which possesses Metal-like clarity and Water-like fluidity, remaining clear when settled and turbid only when disturbed. Ji corresponds to the Spleen, the Yellow Court of the post-heaven phase, head of all Yin, and mother of all things. Wood and Earth harmonizing ensures continuous generation. Jia-Ji non-compliance harms Yi (Liver) and Wu (Stomach) first. Liver damage disrupts Blood harmony, preventing the eyes from distinguishing five colors; Stomach damage deprives the Five Zang organs of nourishment, failing to transport essence to brighten the eyes. Since the Gallbladder thrives with the Liver, liver pathogens corrupt bile, causing dry heat to flare upward and turn the eyeball green. The Spleen relies on the Stomach's Qi; if the Stomach harbors robust pathogens, the Spleen disperses Qi, causing middle-cold and damp-heat to steam upward, turning the eyeball yellow. Green and yellow eyeballs represent the true colors of Jia and Ji. Once true colors appear, true Yuan (Original Qi) is exhausted. The pathways of the Yuan Fu (Micro-orifices) are blocked by pathogens, preventing spiritual brightness from emerging; though the eyes exist, they are as if absent. These two causes ultimately stem from the Seven Emotions and Six Desires, making them hardest to treat. Only through preserving Yuan and guarding Truth, with timely medication, might slight recovery occur. For the aged, frail, and irritable, treatment is futile.
Guan Ge (Obstruction and Rejection) is the key to all diseases, explained in the Baomang section. Yuan Fu (Micro-orifices), according to Liu Hejian, exist in all twelve meridians and serve as the gates for the entry and exit, ascent and descent of Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy). Heat stagnation in the Yuan Fu causes blockage, rendering the five sense organs and four limbs temporarily useless. Thus, Qingmang is essentially Baomang; meridians are Yuan Fu; Guan Ge is blockage. They seem distant but are close, different in name but identical in substance. Saying "Meridians are Yuan Fu" is correct. However, I offer a further interpretation. Jing (Meridians) refer to the six Yin and six Yang channels of the hands and feet; Mai (Collaterals/Vessels) connect the sense organs and extremities; Yuan Fu refers to the Qi and Blood flowing continuously within these vessels day and night. Like flowers and trees, roots and trunks are Jing, branches and leaves are Mai, and rain/dew nourishment resembles Yuan Fu. Damage to roots/trunks wilts branches/leaves; damage to branches/leaves causes flowers/fruits to fall—a fixed principle. Similarly, flying a kite soaring high depends on a single thread for its life force. If suddenly unable to fly, the thread has broken. Humans and kites do not interfere with each other; this condition is analogous.
