Binglang (Arecae Semen), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, i.e., Houpo), Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
The heat epidemic steams and scorches the Shengao (transparent gelatinous substance of the eyeball), causing pain that is unbearable. By treating the epidemic directly, the eyes will naturally become tranquil. In the above formula, Binglang and Nongpu dispel miasma and evil pathogens, and also unblock the annual climate influences (Suiyun). Caoguo releases latent pathogens without damaging the harmonious vital energy (Tianhe).
Because severe heat damages the physical form, pain ensues; Zhimu and Huangqin are used to clear the heat. Prolonged heat consumes Yin, leading to [dryness], so Shaoyao and Gancao are used to pacify and balance it. The epidemic qi is an abnormal atmospheric qi of heaven and earth; its invasion into the human body does not follow the regular pathways of meridians, exterior, and interior, but lodges in the Jiaji (areas beside the spine) near the stomach. This corresponds to what the *Zhenjing* (Needle Classic) refers to as "horizontally connecting to the Mem Yuan" (Moyuan/Double Burner origin). Taking this decoction allows the medicine to reach the disease site directly: severe cases gradually lighten, while mild cases resolve instantly.
Poem says: Binglang, Huangqin, Shaoyao, and Caoguo, Zhimu is hard to endure, Roasted Gancao is thick and sweet, Da Yuan Tang should be prepared urgently.
Binglang (4 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Banfuqu (Banxia and Liushen Qu, 3 liang each), Caoguoren (Tsaokocarpium), Guangjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shanzhourou (Crataegi Fructus), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (2 liang each), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Huoxiang geng (Agastaches Herba stem), Zisuye (Perillae Folium) (1.5 liang each), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang each).
Mix Liushen Qu with fresh ginger juice, use purified flour paste to make pills, sized like marbles. Take one pill at a time, hold in the mouth to dissolve slowly, and swallow gradually. If mental spirit slightly recovers, prepare the ingredients as a decoction according to the prescription, still adding Liushen Qu, and take it together with ginger juice.
This formula specifically treats severe dysentery with Jin Kou (closed mouth/inability to eat) symptoms, where food cannot enter or is vomited immediately upon ingestion. It also treats all seasonal infectious diseases characterized by intense internal and external fever, absence of sweating, and thirst. This occurs because the perverse guest qi (pathogenic factors) of heaven and earth enters the stomach via respiration; when righteous qi fails to overcome the pathogen, the epidemic disease erupts suddenly. There is urgent pain in the head and abdomen, followed by fever, vomiting or diarrhea, making it impossible to swallow even water or gruel. Binglang, Caoguo, Cangzhu, Nongpu, Ginger, Qu, Gancao, and Banxia can reach the Mem Yuan and pacify the Stomach; Jupi, Ziye, Huoxiang geng, Shanzhourou, Chaihu, and Qange can release the muscle layer and rectify the upright qi. Due to heat-toxin blocking upwards, all substances are rejected; thus, Baishaoyao, Huangqin, and Zhimu are used to cool and clear. Because fierce qi knots in the middle, dysentery persists; therefore, Xiangfu, Zhishi, and Qingpi are used to promote Qi movement and relieve stagnation. When the illness is acute and the constitution is excess-type, the heavy and debilitating condition will promptly resolve. Further adjustments based on verified symptoms ensure efficacy without exception; hence, the pill is named Qingping Wan.
Poem says: Qingping first selects the Da Yuan Formula, combined with Pingwei San and Xiang Su San, then added are Qige, Chaihu, Shanzha, Zhishi, and Qu, Qingpi makes the emaciated bones unpredictable again.
