According to pediatric eye diseases, they differ from those in adults. Adult eye diseases are mostly caused by worry, anger, emotional disturbances (Seven Emotions), and excessive sexual desire, leading to internal damage to the Zang-Fu organs and external manifestation in the eyes. As for pediatric eye diseases, they are merely due to fetal toxins and blood heat. Since the symptoms differ, the treatment methods also vary.
Generally, children lack sufficient innate true Qi (Tianzhen), and their Qi and Blood are tender and weak. Occasionally, there may be nebulae or membranes, which are extremely difficult to treat. If dispersing methods (such as sweating) are overused, essence and Qi will scatter; if cold and cooling herbs are used excessively, the Spleen and Stomach will be damaged. Incorrect acupuncture will cause immediate loss of vision; applying heavy-pointing medications easily damages the pupil. One must accurately identify the symptoms. Internal medications must be extremely mild; external eye-drop medications should not be harsh. Proceed with leisurely gradualness, regulate appropriately, and after a long time, it will naturally dissipate. Otherwise, being careless and having light-handed techniques rarely fails to injure the eyes. It is often seen that among infants with eye diseases, one or two out of ten deteriorate on their own, while eight or nine out of ten are injured by improper treatment. Therefore, I have explicitly listed these points for parents and practitioners in this field to pay attention to.
